Wood Initiative kicks off in Danville today
The Southern Virginia Forest Products Initiative will be held today at
Danville’s Institute for Advanced Learning and Research.
Halifax, Pittsylvania and Danville public schools are among the
supporters or sponsors, as is Danville Community College, Morgan
Lumber, Southern Virginia Higher Education Center and Virginia Tech.
Halifax County Public Schools is especially interested in that the
event ties to its newest Academy, the Renewable Resources Academy.
Planners hope to make wood a more visible and profitable entity in
Southside.
According to a flier on the event, “We are creating educational
pathways to create and retain the workforce of tomorrow in Virginia
today — to secure our economic and natural resources sustainability for
tomorrow.”
It adds a desire to “[c]apitalize on Virginia's natural resources,
industrial base, and strengths of our educational providers.”
Halifax schools got a $120,000 state grant a few months ago and is
using it to establish the R&R Academy — short for Renewable Resources.
It will be spread among three sites: the STEM Center in Halifax, the
Moorefield Estate timber tracts in the northern part of the county and
the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center.
