The future of the Washington-Coleman elementary school property will be
the focus of this afternoon's work session of South Boston Town
Council
as members consider drawing up a master plan for use of the facility
which Halifax County has donated back to the Town. Several uses for
the
former school have been suggested such as recreational activities,
senior citizen events and perhaps rental of parts to the school
system,
if needed. Town Manager Ted Daniel has suggested that Dewberry and
Davis (consultants) should be asked to develop a master plan for the
property.
Current Issues Committee members are also expected to consider the
recommendation made by the Town Planning Commission to rezone about
ten
and one-half acres west of the Townes of Greenstone for a townhouse
project. Two other proposals arose during their recent joint meeting
with County Supervisors. The first of those was a recommendation
that
the South Boston and Halifax County Transportation Safety
Commissions
be merged into one group with details of the membership being left
to
the members of the current commissions.
The second recommendation called for the joint sessions of the Town
Councils of South Boston and Halifax to meet quarterly with County
Supervisors rather than bi-monthly as they have over the past
several
years.
The Committee will also consider a request from the Town Association
of
Northern Virginia to oppose HB 28 which requires town council
elections
to be held in the November general election rather than in the May
municipal elections. Members will also consider a staff
recommendation
to transfer a 1930 Federal Census Map of Virginia and 1907/1929
Sanborn
maps to the South Boston Historical Museum for permanent loan.
Current Issues members will also commend Town employees who are
transferring from the Town to the Halifax County Service Authority.
Finance panel members will review the monthly financial statement
and
consider the proposed budget schedule for 2008-09.
