New officers for the Halifax County United Way were announced at the
group's annual meeting on Tuesday evening. Named to head the board were
chairman Sharron Garrett and Denise Taylor-Forrest, vice chairman.
Other members who will serve a three year term are Earl Howerton, Tom
Kluge, Leigh Felton, Rev. Dave Cline and Holly Newton.
Serving two year terms on the board will be Valdivia Marshall, Anne
Leggett, Wayne Conner and Larry Clark. Detra Carr, Rev. James Crowder
and Jules Modlinski will each serve a one year term.
During their Tuesday evening meeting, Garrett conducted a question and
answer session during which time several issues arose. In response to
questions, Garrett said a person would be hired to assist with the
annual fundraising campaign which she envisions being carried out in
the fall — in September and October. At this point, she said, it has
not been determined whether or not the employee would be full-time or
part-time.
Another major decision facing the group is whether or not funds which
the agency has carried over from an earlier campaign will be disbursed
to the organizations which usually receive United Way funds. "That is a
decision this board has to make — how or when," Garrett said.
Members of the group have been meeting over the past several months,
working toward the reorganization of the United Way after no
fundraising campaign was carried out last year.
"We're just delighted that you are back," said Laurietta Faulkner,
executive director of the local Mentor-Role Model Program, one of
several United Way recipients who was present for the Tuesday meeting.
