Halifax County's jobless rate fell to 6.3 percent in August, down from the July rate of 6.5 percent as only 1,002 members of the County's 15,995 member civilian labor force looked for work. Despite the drop the County's rate surpassed that of a year ago in August of 2006 when the unemployment rate was 5.7 percent as 919 people sought jobs.
While Halifax County's rate improved, that of neighboring Mecklenburg County rose significantly from 5.0 in July when 665 members of the county's 13,172 member labor force looked for jobs to 5.8 as 757 members were job hunting during August of 2007. That number was also up from the August 2006 rate of 5.2 when 704 residents looked for work.
Charlotte County also saw its rate rise to 5.4 in August of 2007 as 279 members of the county's 5,187 member labor force was in the job market. In July Charlotte county had a jobless rate of 5.1 percent as 268 people looked for work.
Pittsylvania County's rate stabilized at 6.4 percent for August, just as it had in July of 2007 with 1981 members of its 30,714 member civilian labor force looking for work. Last August Pittsylvania County's unemployed rate stood at 5.9 percent. And to the south Person County, NC saw its rate drop to 6.2 percent, its lowest rate this year. For the past two months Person has registered a jobless rate of 6.9 percent.
