Trustees want public input before making finance class
grad requirement
The Halifax County School Board agreed to defer asking for the state's
approval of a new graduation requirement: a personal finance class.
Deputy Superintendent Larry Clark said the move doesn't necessarily
mean that the class won't be implemented as early as this fall for
incoming ninth graders, but that the administration will hold off on
its formal request until after a public hearing on the matter at its
March meeting.
Clark said guidance counselors are identifying an alternative class for
students now registering for the 2008-09 school year.
The board had voted to implement the class and get the state Board of
Education's blessing for it (a technicality) earlier this month, but
longtime Trustee D.H. McDowell voiced concerns at a work session last
week over how the class could be paid for. The local school system
fears a reduction in the amount of state funds headed its way for the
coming year, plus a local Board of Supervisors has hinted at no
increased funds. McDowell also said the new requirement had been rushed
into, without ample time for feedback from parents.
The vote to defer the request was 7-1, with Trustee Joe Gasperini, who
had led the drive for the class, casting the dissenting vote.
