DIVISION TEACHER OF THE YEAR — Elizabeth "Beth" G. Layne was named the 2007 Division Teacher of the Year on Tuesday night during a banquet held at The Prizery for this year's Teachers of the Year, selected from each of the 14 county schools. Here she accepts her award from D.H. McDowell, chairman of the Halifax County School Board as School Superintendent Paul Stapleton (r) congratulates her.

TEACHERS OF THE YEAR — Named as Teacher of the Year at their respective schools were: Jonci O. Berneche of C.H. Friend Elementary, Jane H. Moore of Clays Mill Elementary, Lynn T. Carr of Cluster Springs, Elizabeth "Beth" G. Layne of Halifax County High School, Margaret "Peg" K. Anderson of Halifax County Middle School, Susan I. Thomasson of Halifax Elementary, Sue S. Pearce of Meadville Elementary, Pamela M. Blanks of Scottsburg Elementary, Anne W. Nichols of Sinai Elementary, Sandra T. Slayton of South of Dan Elementary, Francine W. Davis of Sydnor Jennings Elementary, Marva H. Johnson of Turbeville Elementary, Christie C. Adcock of Washington-Coleman Elementary and Elizabeth C. Conner of Wilson Memorial Elementary.

"She makes us feel good about ourselves and what we do." That was the comment of one of the students of this year's 2007 Division Teacher of the Year — Elizabeth "Beth" G. Layne, English teacher at Halifax County High School.
Layne was selected for the division honor from a pool of 14 candidates, each being named by their peers as their respective school's Teacher of the Year. "I am humbled by the honor," Layne told her fellow teachers, " because of the special qualities of all of you selected at your schools. We all love our students and want to do as much as we can to ensure their learning success."
Jonci O. Berneche was the C.H. Friend Teacher of the Year, Jane H. Moore was selected at Clays Mill Elementary for the home and Lynn T. Carr at Cluster Springs Elementary.
Margaret "Peg" K. Anderson was named Teacher of the Year at Halifax County Middle School and Susan I. Thomasson at Halifax Elementary and Sue S. Pearce at Meadville Elementary.
Pamela M. Blanks was selected for the honor at Scottsburg Elementary, Anne W. Nichols at Sinai Elementary and Sandra T. Slayton at South of Dan Elementary.
Francine W. Davis was named Teacher of the Year at Sydnor Jennings Elementary, Marva H. Johnson at Turbeville, Christie C. Adcock at Washington-Coleman and Elizabeth C. Conner at Wilson Memorial Elementary.
Each of the recipients received a plaque of appreciation and a $500 check. Layne was awarded an additional $500 and her school, Halifax County High School received $1,000 for the honor.
Superintendent of Schools Paul Stapleton thanked the teachers for their dedication and hard work, remarking that it is the teacher in the classroom who makes the difference in the life of the students. Five school board trustees, Chairman D.H. McDowell, Vice Chair Steve Anderson, ED#7 trustee Sandra Rister, ED#5 trustee Nancylee Bagwell and ED#$ trustee Joe Bailey all added their congratulations and thanks to the honorees.
