The 2007 Halifax County real estate and personal property tax bills
were recently mailed out. On qualified personal vehicles with values up
to $20,000, a 35% credit has been taken off as state law allows a
percentage level anticipated to exhaust PPTRA relief funds provided to
Halifax County by the State. Gross weight of these qualified vehicles
must be less than 7,501 pounds. The tax bill shows the net or total due
by the taxpayer. Any questions concerning the values or qualifications

values are assessed by ownership or title as of January 1, 2007.
The deadline for payment for local taxes is Wednesday, December 5,
2007. A postmark date of December 5 is also accepted. A 10% penalty
will be added to all unpaid tax amounts as of December 6, and a 105 per
annum will be added for interest due.
New landowners that have acquired land since January 1, 2007 and have
not received a real estate tax bill should call the County Treasurer's
Office at 476-3318 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through
Friday. Taxpayers are asked to call this Office if you did not receive
a personal property bill, especially those that have moved to a new
address since January 1, 2007. Local ordinance requires that the tax
relief exemption for qualified elderly and disabled persons be applied
only if taxes are paid up to date as of the current deadline on real
estate and mobile homes. If you think you may qualify for this

Taxpayers have the option of paying their County taxes by mail, over
the counter, or using their credit cards by calling Official Payment
Corporation at 1-800-2PAYTAX or 1-800-272-9829. You can also enter
www.officialpayments.com. Please use a ticket number, category of tax,
either real estate or personal property, and the County code of #6236.
All information is on the back of the tax bill. A nominal fee is
charged by Official Payment to use this method. At this time, NO credit
or debit cards are accepted at the County Treasurer's Office for cost
purposes.
