Local Businessman,
Sportsman Racer and now Race Promoter!!
Avis Sutherland and Garland Mcfalls, Jr. Both Sportsman drag racers, have
formed Proglide Promotions. Both Businessmen and Drag Racers Sutherland and
Mcfalls became friends while racing at Roxboro Motorsports over the past few
years. Mcfalls is the President of Tarheel Glass in Durham and Sutherland
is President of Dan River Window Co. here in South Boston. After becoming
friends they also started doing business together with Sutherland
manufacturing and offering installation services for Tarheel Glass. Garland
wanted to expand his glass company to offer a quality line windows but had
little experience with that side of the industry so Avis offered a package
deal to him to where he would take care of all Manufacturing and Installing
so he would be guaranteed a quality product as well as professional
installation while Garland will handle all sales and service after the sale
to his local customers. “This has worked out better than I could have ever
imagined” said Mcfalls, “every customer we have is delighted with the
quality of the product as well as the service!”
This business relationship has grown further as Avis and Garland formed
Proglide Promotions to hold some big drag races. Garland owns a Promod 1963
Corvette and Avis assist him by helping with towing the car to various
events as well as working on the pit crew. After helping throughout the
year Avis mentioned that these cars need more exposure locally and that we
should hold our own races a couple times a year with bigger payouts and more
cars with something extra for the fans, said Mcfalls, and I agreed. While
running in several different series they made friends with Promodified
racers all over the east coast and so they contacted them with their idea
and before they knew it they had one of the largest fields of heads up
racers ever assembled to come into Roxboro Motorsports.
Promodified
drag cars are some of the most powerful drag cars out there, running the 1/8
mile in just over 4 seconds at speeds of over 170 miles per hour. With
motors commonly over 700 cubic inches these monsters of power use up to 4
stages of nitrous to make over 2000 horsepower.
This is a big fan based race also, said Sutherland, stating that they have
several giveaways for cordless drills, children’s bikes, and t-shirts where
you do not have to purchase a ticket for anything, your gate ticket enters
you into the drawings!! Sutherland stated, “We didn’t want a break in the
action and wanted to keep the fans involved so between rounds or when they
are towing back the cars we will be holding drawings throughout the day as
well as throwing some of their Proglide Winterfest 2007 T-shirts in the
stands. If you do not win one of these shirts do not despair as the duo have
had plenty of shirts sized small to 4-XL and they have set it up so you can
get one of these any size for only $12 that’s ½ of what is usually charged
at events of this magnitude.
One thing is for certain is that these guys have provided everything for one
of the best and biggest drag races this area has ever seen and with the
weather forecasts saying mid 60’s and sunny it will prove to be great day to
get out and enjoy the festivities before winter sets in! |
