County Supervisors Monday night "accepted a concept" dealing with the sale of surplus school properties. Building and Grounds Chairman Wayne Conner said his group was looking at three properties which had been
turned back over to the County. Conner told Supervisors the ball field at C. H. Friend Elementary was
being considered for lease at $1 per year for ten years to the youth baseball league for 12-18 year olds which is headed by Bill Moore. The baseball field at South of Dan Elementary was being considered for lease to the Dixie Youth League headed by Harrison Conner, also for $1 per year for the next ten years. Finally, he noted that four acres of the property at Turbeville Elementary School on the west side is being considered to be deeded to
the Turbeville Fire Department which adjoins the property. Conner said he wanted the consensus of the Board about the possible transfer of those properties before having a survey done to determine the exact acreage of each parcel. The surveys, he explained, would be paid for by the party interested in obtaining the property, i.e, the
youth league in South Boston, the Dixie Youth league at South of Dan and the Turbeville Fire Department at Turbeville. He acknowledged that a public hearing would have to be held on the transfer of each of the
properties before any decision could be finalized, but he asked that his committee be allowed to proceed with the plan since there are potential buyers for at least two of the properties. Two supervisors, James Edmunds and Tom West, expressed their opinions of having the properties put up for public auction, rather than conducting any private sale. In other business Monday night County Supervisors were introduced to Kazuko Yamasaki, the Japanese Outreach Initiative Coordinator who is living in the community for two years to help foster a deeper understanding of Japanese culture. The visitor is speaking to various civic groups as well as teaching in the local schools and she is
available to live with local families during her stay here. Currently she is being hosted by Logan and Carolyn Young.
Resident Highway Administrator Joe Barkley presented the finalized Six Year Plan with Route 642 being the top project followed by the reconstruction of Wolf Trap Road. Barkley advised the Board that highway funding is being cut by 33 percent and that final figures for what this district will get will come in June. The Board approved a resolution to close a section of Ramble Road, Route 730, for some 12 weeks in order to replace a culvert there.
