After taking most of the month of July off, County Supervisors will
meet this evening, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the second floor meeting
room of the Mary Bethune Complex in Halifax. Two public hearings will
be held at the beginning of the meeting, with the first being on a
request for a conditional use permit from James D. Anderson in ED#2
which will allow him to operate a tire sales business at 1065 Mill
Road.
The second hearing deals with a proposed change to the county ordinance
which will allow for increased fees for those persons convicted in
circuit or general district courts. The revenue will be used to cover
the courthouse security fee and the sheriff's processing fee.
A decision on a request for a conditional use permit and rezoning
application in ED#6 from Mac Ragans has been postponed until a later
date. Ragans was seeking the permit and rezoning to allow him to
operate a recycling center on a 13 acre tract located off State Route
704 (Old Cluster Springs Road).
The Board will also hear from members of the Southside Community
Services Board which is seeking approval of its performance contract
for FY2008. Supervisors will also be introduced to the new SCSB
executive director Mr. Joe Edwards who joined the agency earlier this
summer.
Supervisors will also be asked to approve a $983,580 bid from D. H.
Griffin, Inc. to carry out the Georgia-Pacific Demolition Project.
Griffin's bid was the lowest of five submissions, nearly $21,000 lower
than the second highest bid of $1,004,500.
The Board will also be considering a solid waste contract with
Lunenburg County which will allow Halifax, Mecklenburg and Charlotte
Counties to use their landfill for those months after the December 31,
2007 closure of the South Boston landfill until the regional landfill
in Mecklenburg is ready to take in solid waste from the three county
members. The initial charge (tipping fee) for that service with is
Lunenburg County is $29 per ton. The individual counties will be
responsible for the cost of hauling the solid waste to the Lunenburg
facility.
Supervisors will also present a resolution of appreciation to former
Industrial Development Authority chairman Larry McPeters, thanking him
for his years of service on the Board. They are also expected to
approve an application for an agency license from the Turbeville
Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department to provide emergency services in a
designated boundary within the county.
