Halifax County will have at least one contested political race in
the November General Election — that being for the office of Sheriff.
On Monday morning former Virginia State Trooper Stanley Noblin
announced that he will challenge incumbent Sheriff D. J. Oakes for the
position. While making his announcement Monday morning at 9 a.m. on the
steps of the Halifax County Courthouse, Noblin was surrounded by a
crowd of supporters numbering around 60-70 people.
Noblin, who resigned his post with the Virginia State Police effective
Sunday, April 1, 2007, said he is running for office after receiving a
large number of requests and a great deal of support from residents who
want to see a positive change in the County's law enforcement.
Noblin says he will be very accessible to the citizens of Halifax
County at all times, giving out not only his home telephone number, but
also his cell phone number and e-mail address.
Futhermore he expects to work cooperatively with all other local and
area law enforcement officers to insure the highest level of safety for
all the County's residents.
Noblin is anxious to see a regional drug task force re-established in
Halifax County which will include members of all the local law
enforcement agencies. (Halifax County currently has no drug task
force.) By including members in the task force of the Virginia State
Police, the South Boston and Halifax police departments, as well as
other area departments, he feels that the added manpower will mean more
time and dedication to eradicating drug abuse throughout the County.
He is also anxious to see that the department offers a positive and
supportive work environment and that all employees have adequate
training and continue to update their training. He strives for
accreditation among members of the department which bring with it
accountability and respect. He hopes to see deputies all earn their
Department of Corrections Criminal Justice certifications and feels
that the sheriff himself needs to actively participate in
investigations and field work.
Running as an independent candidate, Noblin says he sees "no room for
politics in the office. I'm for the equal representation of all our
citizens," he says.
The candidate has a long history in law enforcement. He started his
career in police work over 14 years ago as an officer with the then
Town of Clover Police Department in 1993 during the years of
construction of the Clover Power Plan.
For the following two years from March of 1994 to July of 1996 he
worked as a deputy with the Halifax County Sheriff's Department and was
then hired by the Department of the Virginia State Police where he has
spent the last ten and one-half years as a trooper.
The 37 year old candidate is married to Emily Mitchell Noblin and the
couple has three children, Sara, Olivia and Leo. They live in the
Bethel community. His wife Emily is his campaign manager and either she
or he can be reached at 476-7265, 579-1033 or at snoblin@gcronline.com.
