Halifax County Supervisors on Monday evening adopted a plan to make the
same $405 monthly contribution to employees' health insurance as was
made during the current year. However, the way the contributions will
be made differs from that of the current year in that the County will
pay $362 monthly for each employee, an amount that will cover the
expense of health care for the employee only under two of the four
plans available to them. If the employee chooses one of two other
plans, he/she will contribute to the additional cost. The other $43 will be contributed to the new self-insured fund in order to establish a reserve fund to help better manage costs and minimize potential increases in future rates.
On a motion made by ED#4 Supervisor Doug Bowman and seconded by ED#8 Supervisor Bryant Claiborne, the plan was approved unanimously on a 6-0 vote. (ED#5 Supervisor James Edmunds and ED#6 Supervisor Wayne Conner were absent from the meeting.) Specifically, the county's level of funding will cover 100 percent of the employee only premium for the $1250/100 percent high deductible health plan. If the employee chooses the $1250-80-20 high deductible health plan the County will pay 100 percent of the employee-only premium and still be able to contribute approximately $60-$70 per month
to the employee's health savings account. For deductible plans of $200 and $500 the premiums will exceed the County's contribution of $362 so the employee will have to make up the difference through payroll deductions. The exact amount of their contribution will depend on the level of dental coverage they choose.Bids for dental coverage are due on April 19 at which time the exact amount of employee contribution will be known. The Board has set meetings for County employees on May 8 and May 9 at which time employees will be able to discuss at length the new plans and clear up any questions in order that they can make the best choice for themselves and their families. Representatives of Southern Health, the company chosen by the County earlier to provide the plans, will be present to answer employees' questions.
In other business, Supervisors on a 6-0 vote renewed for one year the
contract with Robinson Farmer Cox to do the County's annual audit.
