Halifax County is fortunate to have two state parks located within
its
boundaries. The smaller of the two, Staunton River Battlefield Park,
offers the best in hiking and birding. Visitors come from near and
far
to catch sight of a wide variety of birds.
They also come to hike the not only beautiful paths through the
park,
but also to hear of the history which took place there when a ragtag
group of Confederate young boys and old men held off some 5,000
Union
cavalry soldiers who came to destroy a bridge that was so important
to
General Lee's army back in 1865.
While the Battlefield Park offers no accommodations for overnight
guests, its big sister, Staunton River State Park, is just 20
minutes
away, offering cabins and campgrounds for visitors who want to
remain
in the area.
It is the site of many festivals and Civil War re-enactments and
also
offers a picnic shelter which can be rented during the day. The
shelter
can accommodate up to 90 visitors and offers access to restrooms,
grills, picnic tables and vending machines.
A gift shop displays much of the history of the area, as well as
exhibits on electric energy.
