At least one newcomer has qualified to run for Council in the Town of
South Boston in the upcoming May election and another announced his
intention to seek the office late yesterday.
Radford Trent, who served on the Town's governing body some years ago,
but who is still trying to decide whether to run, has completed his
paperwork for filing, County Registrar Judy Meeler confirmed yesterday.
And Dr. Mark Morris confirmed that he will run for Council also. Morris
said he felt this would provide him with a good opportunity to give
back to the community and to help the citizens in many ways. Morris
says he has not yet completed his paperwork, but expects to have it
finished and ready to turn in by Monday.
Meeler said incumbent South Boston Mayor Carroll Thackston and
incumbent Council member Sandra Thompson have also completed their
paperwork for filing for re-election. Incumbent Councilman Morris
Bryant has picked up the forms, but has not yet gotten all of his
signatures, the Registrar said.
Earlier this year, Thackston, along with Thompson, Bryant and
Councilman Coleman Speece all said they will seek re-election in May.
Only Councilman Chris Elliott said he will not seek his seat since he
wanted to avoid any semblance of having a conflict of interest with his
company doing business with the Town. (Elliott said he will become a
stockholder in his company in the near future and that might present a
problem for the company and the Town.)
Candidates have until next Tuesday, March 4 at 7 p.m. to qualify to
run in the May municipal elections.
In Virgilina Ralph Murray has filed to run for mayor with incumbent
council members Edward Chandler, Jr., Mary Helen Gravitt, Owen Murray
and Kirk C. Hooper all running to retain their seats. New newcomers,
Tammy Elliott and Jason Johnson, have filed to fill the other two seats
available on Council..
Meeler said she has not yet had anyone from Halifax or Scottsburg Town
Councils to file any paperwork necessary to run for office.
