The South Boston Garden Club identified an area at the entrance into
the Town of South Boston that was created by the widening of U.S. Hwy.
360 that lacked any landscaping.  This expanse of bare ground was the
first thing that travelers see when entering into town.
The Civic Improvement Chairman of the Club approached the Town of South
Boston and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to explore
landscaping the area as a civic improvement project for our Club.  The
initial contact was enthusiastically received by both the Town and
VDOT.  Planning for the project was started in July, 2007 and was
completed in March, 2008.
VDOT supplied the specifications for the project which consisted of 28
"Tuscarora" Crapemyrtles set in four beds of seven trees each in the
median of U.S. Hwy. 360 just inside the town limits.  Each bed is an
oval 50 feet long with an overall length of landscaped area of 440
feet.
The Town of South Boston awarded a grant for the project and agreed to
take over future care of the landscaped area.  The Garden Club members
raised funds through donations from local sponsors to insure that the
project costs were covered.  The Club contacted to purchase the trees
and have the beds planted and mulched.  The Civic Improvement Chairman
worked closely with the Town and VDOT to see that the project moved
forward in a timely manner and the Publicity Chairman insured that the
project milestones were publicized appropriately.
The South Boston Garden Club is pleased to complete a project that will
welcome travelers into our town as well as providing a lovely farewell
for travelers leaving the town.  We anticipate that this landscaping
project will provide a beautiful welcome for years to come.
