South Boston Town Council will hold its regular monthly meeting tonight
beginning at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers on Yancey Street. The first
item of business is a public hearing on a request from Founders College
to rezone a portion of their property to planned development business
and planned development residential. Town Planners earlier recommended
approval of the change which would allow for expansion of college
facilities behind the historic mansion and which would allow for
business development within the recently purchased additional land
Founders has bought.
Council is also expected to take action on a report from its Board of
Viewers responding to a request from Mr. Leon Brade to close an
unopened alleyway which lies at the rear of his property west of Suggs
Avenue between Wiliams and Briggs Street.. However, neighboring land
owners have opposed the closure, saying it would affect their ability
to enter their property.
Members are further expected to amend the Town Code to give the Halifax
County Service Authority the right to enforce Chapter 106 on utilities
since the Town will no longer be directly supplying water and sewer
services after March 1, 2008.
They are also expected to extend the terms of two members of the Town’s
Planning Commission from eight years to 12. Commission chairman George
Leonard asked that the terms of Mrs. Harriett Claiborne and Mr. Fields
Thomas be extended since training for members is expensive and both
members are willing to serve an additional term. Each has been on the
Commission for the full two four year terms that the Town Code allows.
As always Council will allow for citizen comment at the end of its
agenda. There will be no work session for Council in December due to
the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
