South Boston Town Council Monday evening gave its final approval to the
upcoming year's $7.3 million general fund budget and its $3.1 million
in the water and sewer fund. The approved budget calls for no increases
in taxes nor any hikes in fees. In appropriating the funds for the
budget Councilman Chris Elliott opposed, noting that he felt the Town
should continue to pick up commercial trash. But Town administrators
point out that service will be too costly for the Town to handle,
although town employees will continue to collect residential wastes.
Also on Monday afternoon Council members recommended that a public
hearing be set for their July 9 meeting on a request from Mrs. Jenny
Wilkins, who is seeking to have an alley which is adjacent to her
Merritt Street home closed. Following the July public hearing the Town
will appoint a Board of Viewers to evaluate the request.
In their final action Council members recognized the South Boston Lions
Club which is celebrating its 80th anniversary this week.
