In a short meeting Monday evening South Boston Town Council adopted the Town's $14 million budget for FY 2007-08. The budget calls for no hikes in the Town's 19 cent per $100 assessed value real estate tax and no increase in the personal property tax of $2 per $100 value. It also includes no increases in water and sewer rates.
The overall budget shows a 27.13 percent decrease over the current year's $19.2 million budget. Also on Monday night Council approved an agreement with the South Boston-Halifax County Museum of Fine Arts to relocate the little red caboose, formerly owned by Norfolk and Western Railroad, to the Museum property, located at 1540 Wilborn Avenue in South Boston.
Town Manager Ted Daniel said the museum plans to restore the caboose and make it available as an exhibit facility to inform, educate and entertain the citizens of the Town and Halifax County on a year round basis. The addition will also add to the Museum's ability to attract more school tours that will enhance SOL scores for local students and increase tourism attractions for the town and county. Council also named Tommy Elliott and Larry Harris to new four year terms on the Town's Industrial Development Authority and Barbara Speece to a new four year term on the Halifax County-South Boston Regional Library Board. Police Chief Jim Binner was named to fill a vacancy on the Southside VASAP Board following the resignation of former Police Chief Mick Reed and Binner was also named, along with in-coming Fire Chief Steve Phillips, to the Halifax County E-911 Board.
Town Finance Director Erle Scott was named to the Lake Country Development Corporation to replace Town Planner Lee Pambid who moved to Henrico County.
Council also approved a Fair Housing Resolution prohibiting discrimination in the sale or rental of housing.
