On Thursday, October 18th, Professor Scott Adams, Psy.D. will present
his lecture entitled "The Psychological Value of a Self-Concept" at
Founders College at the Berry Hill Estate.
Dr. Adams' talk is based on the fact that everyone has a self-concept –
a fundamental evaluation of one's existence and effectiveness in all
areas of his or her life. A self-concept is built on a person's ethical
view of themselves and their assessment of their competence to live
productive and satisfying lives.
Dr. Adams will discuss the importance of a strong and realistic
self-concept for psychological health. A healthy self-concept is
essential to meet life's challenges; a person with an unrealistic or
negative self-concept may be setting themselves up for failure and
frustration. Because it is such a central feature of everyone's
psychological health, self-concept is also a fundamental idea for the
study of psychology.
Dr. Adams has been a therapist and a psychological researcher, and
currently serves as Associate Program Director for the Mental Health
Program of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. Next
year, he will be joining the faculty of Founders College as a professor
of psychology.
Dr. Adams' lecture will begin at 7:00 PM. The lecture is free and open
to the public. If you would like to join the speaker and have preferred
seating at the lecture, please join us for dinner at 6:30 PM. The cost
of dinner is $15 for high school or college students, and $39 for the
general public.
