The Halifax County School Board tonight is expected to address what to do with its many unused school properties: C.H. Friend, either old Cluster Springs or South of Dan, Turbeville, Wilson Memorial and maybe Halifax elementaries. Typically, schools are handed back to the Board of Supervisors if not needed by a school system. As the county’s governing body, the Supervisors then keep the property or sell it. Supervisors noted during the recent budgeting process that they would like to sell some of the properties to recoup the additional $250,000 they allocated for school operations.

The board meets tonight for its regular July meeting.
Also, Trustees are expected to vote on a more strict student cell-phone policy that would mandate the devices be turned off and kept out of sight at all times during the school day. Teachers report increasing problems with cell phones, particularly among teens, who use the phones to text-message friends.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Mary Bethune Office Complex in Halifax
