South Boston Town Council Monday night appointed four residents to
serve on the Board of Viewers to determine if any inconvenience would
result from the closure of an alley that lies between North Main Street
and Suggs Avenue. The appointment of the viewers followed a public
hearing during which Mr. Leon Brade asked Town Council to close the
alleyway. During the hearing two residents of the Town, Levi Hamilton
and his wife, Amelia, objected to the closure, saying it would prevent
them from reaching property they owned at the rear of the alley. Martha
Henry also e-mailed Council of her objections to the alley's closure.
Council asked Buddy Wilborn, Ann Crabtree, Les Powell and Aubrey
Houghton to view the requested alley closure and bring back a
recommendation to them at their next monthly meeting.
In other business on Monday evening Council approved a proposal to four
lane Hamilton Boulevard from its intersection with John Randolph
Boulevard to its intersection with North Main Street. The Town staff
had recommended the four laning, pointing to the added traffic of
school buses and parents in transporting their elementary aged children
to the new South Boston Elementary School, as well as the new
businesses which are locating in the Houghton Industrial Park there.
Council also approved amending the Town's Six Year Transportation Plan
to include the four laning of Hamilton. Both approvals followed public
hearings on both issues.
Council also voted to join with other communities in asking the General
Assembly to cap the interest rate on payday or auto title loans.
Members also approved the Town's participation in the Elm Tree
Restoration Program with the planting of a 12 foot American Liberty Elm
which will be located in either the Cotton Mill Park or Edmunds Park.
Participation in the program is being sponsored by Wal-Mart.
