South Boston Town Council will be meeting this afternoon, a week
earlier than usual due to the upcoming Veterans Day holiday next
Monday.
Council has three public hearings on its agenda, including one on a
request to close an unopened alley that lies between North Main Street
and Suggs Avenue. Council is expected to appoint a Board of Viewers to
study the matter and bring back a report to them at their next meeting.
Two other public hearings deal with road issues, the first being a
recommendation to four lane Hamilton Boulevard from its intersection
with John Randolph Boulevard to its intersection with North Main
Street. Town officials feel that with the increase of traffic from the
new elementary school and more business locating in the Houghton
Industrial Park that the two lanes are not sufficient to carry the
traffic.
The next public hearing deals with amending the Town's Six Year Plan to
include the four laning of Hamilton.
In other business tonight Council is expected to appoint Captain Dwight
Spangler as South Boston's fire official and members are also expected
to pass a resolution asking the General Assembly to cap consumer loans
at 38 percent from payday and auto title lenders.
Finally Council is expected to approve the Town's participation in the
Elm Tree Restoration program by becoming a Liberty Tree Memorial Town.
Wal-Mart has agreed to be the sponsor of the program, and Council must
agree on a location for the memorial tree and plan an annual
celebration highlighting the event.
