South Boston Town Council made quick work of their short agenda on
Monday evening, approving a rezoning request for 10.5 acres west of
Hamilton Boulevard and north of Townes of Greenstone from R-4
multi-family residential to PD-R Planned Development Residential. No
citizen offered any opposition to the rezoning which had been
recommended for approval by the Town's Planning Commission.
Ted Daniel, who serves as Zoning Administrator for the Town, pointed to
the success of the development of the Townes of Greenstone, saying the
builder, Christian Roberts had pleased a lot of people. "He's done a
great job with the development," said Councilman Bill Snead. "We hope
there'll be more pleased people," chimed in Mayor Carroll Thackston.
The vote for approval was unanimous with Snead and Councilman Chris
Elliott both abstaining from the vote since both had earlier done work
for Roberts.
In the other agenda item Council unanimously agreed to house the
original 1889, 1907 and 1929 South Boston Town maps, as well as the
1930 Virginia Federal Census map at the South Boston-Halifax County
Museum of Fine Arts and History. While the maps will be on permanent
loan to the Museum, the Town will retain ownership of them.
The loan agreement is valid for five years and is automatically
renewable at the end of the period unless otherwise re-negotiated.
Council members also agreed to a proposed budgeting schedule which
starts with having departmental budget requests turned into the Finance
Director by February 15. The Finance Committee hopes to present its
first budget draft to Council on March 31 with two workshops scheduled
on April 14 and April 28. They expect to be able to hold a public
hearing on the proposed budget on May 12 and then adopt it on first
reading with the second reading and final adoption coming on June 9.
Council also discussed possible locations for the Virginia Employment
Commission to find space for its operations.
