South Boston Police Chief G. Mitchell "Mick" Reed has accepted a
position as Chief of Police for the City of Washington, NC,
effective
June 1, 2007. Reed has just completed his third year as the Town's
police chief, after coming to South Boston in April of 2004,
following
the retirement of Chief Jim Hall.
Reed said yesterday that leaving South Boston and this community has
caused him a lot of pain. "I have enjoyed working with the people of
this community, but an opportunity arose for me to advance and I
couldn't turn it down."
He spoke most highly of South Boston's police force. "It's certainly
not about me, and this department is in very good hands. We are
fortunate to have very hard working and professional members of the
police force."
"I am privileged to have known Mick and to have been able to work
with
such an outstanding individual and police professional," said Town
Manager Ted Daniel.
Noting that Reed has been instrumental in hiring and training an
exceptional group of young police officers in the Town, Daniel said
that through his leadership the department has made great strides in
achieving accreditation through the Virginia Law Enforcement
Professional Standards Commission.
"Chief Reed has been an exemplary role model and leader for his
immediate staff and the Department in general. His leadership will
be
sorely missed," Daniel said. "I knew from the first time I met Mick
that he was a unique individual. I'm sure my counterpart in
Washington,
North Carolina felt the same way. I wish Mick and Peggy the best as
they start a new chapter in their lives. We are really going to miss
them," Daniel said.
Daniel said Council has not addressed the issue of replacing Reed,
but
added "we will reflect on our options and address the issue in due
time."
