The Town of Halifax will purchase a recycling van and various equipment
from Recycling Works in order to continue its curbside recycling
effort. For the past two weeks Town employees, with assistance from Don
and Jenny Hochstein, owners of Recycling Works, have collected the
recyclables placed at the curb by residents of the Town (the Hochsteins
are closing their business). And Town Council members have been very
supportive of continuing the curbside service which was started back in
1991 by Town employees.
In 2002 Recycling Works took over the curbside recycling work at no
charge to the town. In June 2005, Halifax purchased 275 bins for
recycling use by residents and businesses throughout the town. While
there are some 570 households and businesses which are serviced by the
Town's Sanitation Department, Recycling Works has averaged collecting
recycled materials from only about 80 per week or 14 percent of the
households and businesses. But double that number or 160 bins have been
distributed around the town for recycling.
Town Council members during earlier meetings this month noted that the
service needs to be expanded greatly since the Town mandates that
certain materials be recycled.
During the past two weeks when Town employees carried out the service
it was estimated that it takes between three and four hours to complete
the task and that the cost of oil and gas will run about $80 per month
for an annual cost of $960.
