The Halifax County Public Service Authority last night held its final
public comment on the proposed rate schedule for customers of the Towns
of South Boston and Halifax, as well as the urban planning area.
Authority members approved a facilities rate of $---. down from the
advertised $750 hook-up fee for water and another $750 hook-up fee for
sewer services. Local contractors had earlier balked at the proposed
fees which combined would add hefty expenses to new home owners. They
maintained that the fees were much higher than those of neighboring
communities which would put them at a competitive disadvantage.
On the other hand, Commission members pointed out that they have to be
able to pay their bills with the revenue they generate. Any additional
customers could drive those bills up and they feel it would be unfair
to ask the existing customers to pay for any additions.
