Pete, the drug sniffing dog that had worked for Halifax County and the
Town of South Boston for the past eight years, died on Saturday, August
4 at his home. "I was terribly upset; his loss was just heartbreaking
for me," said his trainer, Todd Moser of the South Boston Police
Department.
"The kids all loved him," Moser said of the ten year old black lab who
was a frequent visitor at schools and special events, showing off
knowledge of his work. "He did a lot of good for this community; he
never called in sick and never took a day off. He was totally loyal to
his work." Moser said he loved the attention that he got when he went
into the schools.
Pete died of breathing difficulties at his home, but was also believed
to have an infection from cancer, Moser said. He worked with Moser for
three years at the Halifax County Sheriff's Department beginning in
1999. He then transferred with his trainer to the South Boston
Department in 2003 and then retired from his work in 2006.
Moser has a new canine unit, Kimbo, which will replace Pete in his
work, but Pete will always remain in his heart, he said.
