SOUTH BOSTON CHRISTMAS PARADE IS BIGGER & BETTER
"This year's South Boston Christmas parade on Saturday, December 1st at
5:00 p.m. is bigger and better than ever," stated Sara Davis, parade
coordinator. "Each year the parade committee tries to build on the
previous year's parade success."
This year's parade, sponsored by Destination Downtown South Boston and
Elliott Electric, Inc., has certainly accomplished that! There will be
over 20 floats, most with lights, in the parade. We have a record
seven High School Marching Bands from North Carolina and South Central
Virginia participating this year.
The parade is also sponsoring more charities this year. The Marine
Corps from Roanoke will be back this year collecting new, unwrapped
toys for the "Toys For Tots" program in Halifax County. The dog parade
this year will once again give all entry fees to the Halifax County
Humane Society. This year we have added two hot chocolate and cookie
vendor locations along the parade route with all the proceeds going to
the Angel Tree.
Downtown is lit up and ready. "Last year we had almost 6,000 people
view the parade," stated Davis. "This year we expect an even bigger
crowd, but we'll have the hot chocolate and cookies to warm the tummie
and we've added port-a-johns along the parade route. "So we invite
everyone downtown on Saturday for a great family outing that is sure to
be an event you don't want to miss!"00
The Town of Halifax to host Parade on Sunday Evening
The Halifax Christmas Parade comes on the heels of the Village Business
Association's Open House this Sunday afternoon. Stores in the Town of
Halifax will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. for the convenience of Christmas
shoppers with several of the stores offering special discounts and
refreshments.
The parade, which starts at 6:30 on Sunday evening will be led by the
Town's longest serving merchant and Grand Marshal, Mr. Howard Dix. The
Blue Comet band will also be there as will the JROTC color guard and
Mayor Leon Plaster.
Other participants include several floats, the 4-H Top Guns, Awana, the
Club Scouts, fire trucks, antique cars and trucks and beautiful horses.
"We still have room for more participants," said Stephanie Crump who is
organizing the event. You may call her at 476-7246 for more
information. There is no charge to partipate.
