Obituaries
Mr. Clarence Edward Person
Mr. Clarence Edward Person of 2004 Alderson Avenue, South Boston died
Monday, August 27, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 81.
Born in Emporia on August 30, 1925 to the late Mr. Haywood Person and Mrs.
Lugenia Goins Person, he was married to the late Mr. Virginia Younger
Person. He was a member of McLaughlin Memorial United Holiness Church and
was a World War II Army veteran and a retired brick mason.
Mr. Person is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Marion T. Johns of Palmyra,
NJ, Mrs. Doris Person of Camden, NJ, and Mrs. Jean Williams of
Tallahassee, FL, devoted nephew and nieces, Mr. Erwin Wilkerson of Dale
City, VA,, Mrs. Gloria Gosling of Reidsville, NC, Mrs. Tonia Wilkerson and
Mrs. Cynthia Wilkerson, both of Washington, DC, a sister-in-law, Mrs.
Rebecca Person of Trenton, NJ, a brother-in-law, Mr. Don Williams and a
host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including the
devoted Novella, James and Marissa Jackson. He was preceded in death by a
brother, Mr. William Person.
A funeral service for Mr. Person will be held Thursday, August 30 at 11
a.m. at McLaughlin Memorial United Holiness Church with Rev. Leonard
Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Garden cemetery. The
family will receive friends at the home, 2004 Alderson Avenue, South
Boston.
Lillian Anderson Taylor
Lillian Anderson Taylor, 88, of La Crosse died August 24, 2007. Born
in Halifax County on January 21, 1919, she was preceded in death by her
husband, W. Edwin Taylor.
She is survived by her son, William E. Taylor, Jr. (Billy) and wife, Judy
of Colonial Heights; a granddaughter, Nancy Taylor Fontana of Chester; and
two beloved nieces, Mary Jean Childrey of Halifax and Jane McAlexander of
Ashland.
A funeral service was held Sunday at Farrar Funeral Chapel. Interment
followed in La Crosse Cemetery. Memorial considerations may be directed to

Mr. William Lee Smoot, Sr
Mr. William Lee Smoot, Sr.78, of 1032 Dixon Lane, Halifax died Tuesday,
August 28, 2007 at his home. He was born in Halifax County on May 18,
1929, son of the late Clarence Edward Smoot and Lucy Annie Oakes Smoot. He
was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church.
He is survived by one son, Raymond D. Smoot, Sr. and wife Bobbie of
Halifax; four grandchildren, Ray Smoot, Jr., Mitch Smoot, Darlene Smoot
and David Smooth; four step-grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; two
sisters, Mary Saunders and Doris Thomas, both of South Boston. He was
preceded in death by one son, William Lee Smoot, Jr., three sisters and
three brothers.
Memorial services will be held Friday, August 31 at 3:00 p.m. at Seventh
Day Adventist Church with Pastor Dan Darrikhuma officiating.
Mrs. Lottie Belle Jones Traynham
Mrs. Lottie Belle Jones Traynham85, of Clover died Friday, August 24, 2007
at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in Halifax County on July 3,
1922, daughter of the late Mr. Walter Jones and Mrs. Olivia Dodson Jones
and was married to the late Mr. Bennie Traynham and a member of Pleasant
Grove Baptist.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Hattie Britton of Clover; four sons,
Mr. Roy Traynham of Crystal Hill, Mr. Howard Jones of Baltimore, MD, Mr.
Walter Traynham and Mr. Rickey Traynham, both of New Haven, CT; two
sisters, Mrs. Mildred Brown of New Haven, CT and Mrs. Mary Lee Davis of
Scottsburg; four daughters-in-law, Mrs. Ellen Traynham, Mrs. Nancy
Traynham, Mrs. Dedra Jones and Mrs. Josephine Traynham; one son-in-law,
Mr. Charlie Britton; 29 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren; one
brother-in-law, Mr. Wilson Davis; other relatives and friends. She was
preceded in death by two daughters, Ms. Elnora Traynham and Ms. Viola
Traynham and four sons, Mr. Frank Traynham, Mr. William Traynham, Mr.
Roger Traynham and Mr. James Traynham.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 1 at 11:00 a.m. at
Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Ronald Claiborne officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends
on Friday from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at Crawford House Chapel, Halifax.
Mrs. Erma Lee Barley
Mrs. Erma Lee Barley, 80, of Brookneal died August 24, 2007 in Lynchburg.
She is survived by her husband, Adolphus; two sons, Adolphus "Butch"
Barley (Linda) of Brookneal and Alvin Barley (Renee) of Cheshire, CT;
three daughters, Peggy Thomas (Victor) of Lynchburg, Jacqueline Campbell
(Gregory) of Fort Wayne, ID and Terry Buster (Meade) of Nathalie; 10
grandchildren, Vernon (Sharon), Sonja Pannell, LaShuna Thomas, Kendrick,
Keon and Brittney Jennings, Alvin, Jr. and Andrea Barley and Meade Jr. (Ketura)
and Brandon Buster; one brother, Charlie "C.E." Bradley of Brookneal;
sisters-in-law, Annie and Patricia Barley, Rebecca Winstead and Janice
Hendricks and Claretha and Ruby Bradley; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 28 at Green Spring Baptist
Church, Brookneal with interment in the church cemetery.
