Obituaries
Mr. Charlie Roosevelt Overby
Mr. Charlie Roosevelt Overby, 66, of 6371 NC Highway 119N died
Saturday, August 25, 2007 at Person Memorial Hospital. Born in
Mecklenburg County, he was the son of the late Walter and Sallie
Puryear Overby. Mr. Overby worked for the NC DOT and was a member of
Nelson Baptist Church of Nelson.
Mr. Overby is survived by his wife, Carol Marklew Overby, four
children, Charlie Overby, Jr. of South Boston, Melinda Davis of
Roxboro, NC, Chris Overby of Leasburg and Stephanie Whitley of
Savannah, GA and four grandchildren, Austin Rimmer, Victoria Rimmer,
Kaitlyn Coleman and Michael Whitley.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 27 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at
Brooks & White Funeral Home in Roxboro, N.C. A funeral service will be
conducted on Tuesday August 28 at Brooks & White Chapel with the Rev.
James McAllister officiating. Memorials may be made to the Nelson
Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Chuck Nelson, 3054 Nelson Church
Road, Nelson, VA 24580.
Mr. Robert Earl Cash
Mr. Robert Earl Cash, 74, of 4142 Hunting Creek Road, Nathalie died
Thursday, August 23, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born September
2, 1932 in Amherst County, he was a logger and was of the Holiness
faith.
Mr. Cash is survived by his wife, Virginia Clark Cash of the home, a
daughter, Rita Conner and husband, Mike of Nathalie and three sons,
Allen Cash and wife, Tammy of Clover, Michael Cash of Halifax and
Johnny Cash and wife Cathy of Lynchburg, nine grandchildren and 11
great grandchildren. Also surviving are five brothers, Roy Cash of
Nathalie, Bill and Hardy Cash, both of South Boston, Glenn Cash of
Halifax and Junior Cash of Dallas, Texas and a sister, Phyllis Davis of
Emporia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Cash and Celie
Sorrels Cash, two sons, Danny Lee Cash and Anthony Wayne ìBillyî Cash,
three sisters and a brother.
A graveside service was conducted on Sunday, August 28 at 11 a.m. at
Clover Cemetery with the Rev. Vance Midgett officiating. The family

Mr. Phillip Patrick Dixon
Mr. Phillip Patrick Dixon, 52, of South Boston died Wednesday, August
22, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in Halifax County
on October 24, 1954, a son of the late Mr. Junious Dixon and Mrs.
Lucinda Palmer Dixon and was a member of County Line Baptist Church.
He is survived by two daughters, Ms. Silicia Dixon and Ms. Tajah Dixon,
both of Capitol Heights, MD; two sons, Mr. Phillip Dixon, Jr. and Mr.
Phillakee Dixon, both of Capitol Heights, MD; five sisters, Mrs. Reatha
Howell of Maulden, SC, Mrs. Geneva Hughes of Halifax, Mrs. Jearlean
Hunt and Mrs. Linda Brown, both of Nathalie, Mrs. Cynthia Brown of
Crystal Hill; two brothers, Mr. Earl Dixon of Nathalie and Mr. Winfred
Dixon of Washington, DC; two grandchildren, Ms. Senise Dixon and Mr.
Phillip Dixon, III; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Barbara Dixon; three
brothers-in-law, Mr. Bennie Howell, Mr. Calvin Hughes and Mr. Samuel
Brown; three aunts, one uncle, other relatives and friends. He was
preceded in death by one brother, Mr. Eddie Louis Dixon.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 25 at Crawford House Chapel
with Rev. Dr. Otis R. Dillard officiating. Burial followed in County
Line Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Brandon Wayne Cash
Mr. Brandon Wayne Cash, 19, of 1073 Lennig Road, Nathalie died Monday,
August 20, 2007 in Pittsylvania County. He was born in South Boston on
December 10, 1987, a son of the late Marvin Wayne Cash and Teresa Lloyd
Short and was engaged to be married to Kristina West. He attended
Winns Creek Baptist Church and was a marine technician with Hughes
Marine, Danville.
He is survived by his mother and step-father, Teresa L. Short and
husband Christopher of Nathalie; one brother, Dakota L. Cash of
Nathalie; his maternal grandparents, Garnett Lloyd Sr. and Evelyn B.
Lloyd of Nathalie; step-grandparents, James R. Short and Brenda D.
Short of Java; his paternal grandparents, Virginia Womack of Crystal
Hill and Hardy Cash of Halifax; and other relatives and friends.
Memorial services were held Saturday, August 25 at Winns Creek Baptist
Church with Rev. James Kopko officiating. Memorials may be directed to
the Liberty Volunteer Fire Department.
Mrs. Ella Mae Robertson Long
Mrs. Ella Mae Robertson Long, 78, of 1079 Swain Road, Halifax died
Wednesday, August 22, 2007 at South Boston Manor. She was born in
Halifax County on April 23, 1929, a daughter of the late Hattie Davis
Robertson Long and George Washington Robertson and was married to the
late Edwin Franklin Long, Sr. She was a member of Mountain Road
Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Burlington Industries.
She is survived by one daughter, Linda Long Link and husband Bernice of
Alton; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Becky S. Long of Halifax; three
sisters, Henrieta R. Reagan, Betty R. Snead and Shelby R. Keatts, all
of South Boston and a brother, Billy Robertson of South Boston; three
grandsons, Paul Daniel Link, Clifton Edward Link and Edwin Franklin
Long, III and two granddaughters, Christina L. Lewis and Lisa Long
Whitt; and special friend, Ruby Bagby. She was preceded in death by a
son, Edwin Franklin Long, Jr.
Graveside funeral services were held Saturday, August 25 at Oak Ridge
Cemetery with Rev. Andy Patterson and Rev. Brian Simmons officiating.

Mrs. Virgie L. Burns Barksdale
Mrs. Virgie L. Burns Barksdale, 85, of South Boston died Tuesday,
August 21, 2007 at The Woodview. She was born in Halifax County on
January 24, 1922, a daughter of the late Mr. Henry Archer Burns and
Mrs. Elizabeth Fleming Burns and was married to the late Mr. Earnest
Barksdale, Sr. She was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church.
She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Millie Green of Scottsburg,
Mrs. Evelyn Coleman of Richmond, Mrs. Mary Claiborne of Halifax and Ms.
Blair Barksdale of Glen Allen; four sons, Mr. Milton Barksdale of
Scottsburg, Mr. James Barksdale of Boydton, Mr. Earnest Barksdale, Jr.
and Mr. Roger Barksdale, both of Alexandria; one brother, Mr. Willie J.
Burns of Ruther Glenn; three daughters-in-law, Mrs. Deborah Barksdale,
Mrs. Josephine Barksdale and Mrs. Doris Barksdale; one son-in-law, Mr.
Cleophas Green; 23 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; devoted
caregiver, Mrs. Sylvia Smith; other relatives and friends. She was
preceded in death by two sons, Mr. Carl D. Barksdale and Mr. Jeffrey L.
Barksdale.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 25 at Crawford House Chapel
with Rev. Dr. Whitfield Scott officiating. Burial followed in Piney
Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Pauline Farmer
Mrs. Pauline Farmer, 85, of Philadelphia, PA, formerly of Halifax
County, died August 15, 2007. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Lula
Estelle Reed of Richmond; one brother, Mr. Benjamin Farmer, Sr. of
Vernon Hill; other relatives and friends.
Memorial services were held Saturday, August 25 at Christ Temple Blue
Rock.
The Rev. Herman Vaughan "H.V." Conner, Jr
The Rev. Herman Vaughan "H.V." Conner, Jr., 83, of 2100 Eastover Drive,
South Boston, died August 22, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He
was born in Halifax County on February 5, 1924, a son of the late
Herman Vaughan Conner, Sr. and Lillian Beatrice Anderson Conner and was
married to Sarah Wilborn Conner. He was a member of Black Walnut
Baptist Church, a World War II Army Veteran and a member of Woodmen of
the World. As a Baptist minister, Rev. Conner served many churches in
Virginia and North Carolina. He was a 1940 graduate of Clover High
School and a 1974 graduate of Southeastern Theological Seminary, Wake
Forest, NC. He served as pastor of Clover Bottom Baptist Church,
Mulberry Baptist Church and Buffalo Baptist Church and from 1965-1972
as pastor of Gravel Hill Baptist Church. While attending Southeastern,
he was pastor of Warren Plains Baptist Church. Upon graduation in
1974, he served as pastor of Midway Baptist Church, Gretna, for 14
years, then as pastor of Clarksville Baptist Church. His last
pastorate was at Black Walnut. He served interim pastorates at
Florence Avenue Baptist Church, Scottsburg Baptist Church, Hunting
Creek Baptist Church and Buffalo Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Charles V. Conner
and wife Rhonda S. Conner of Halifax; one granddaughter, Windy C.
Carter; two great-grandsons, Anderson Dayne Carter and Reese Averett
Carter; three sisters, Margaret C. Anderson and husband Charlie of
Nathalie, Mildred C. Smith of Red Oak, Grace C. Young and husband Ed of
South Boston; four brothers, William Julian Conner and wife Stevie of
Lynchburg, Franklin Perry Conner and wife Mazie of Stafford, Roy Davis
Conner and wife Betty Lou of Mint Spring, Mickey Lewis Conner and wife
Martha of Virgilina; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in
death by two brothers, Robert L. Conner and James R. Conner.
Graveside services were held Saturday, August 25 at Halifax Memorial
Gardens with Rev. Dr. Melvin Bradshaw officiating. Memorials may be
