Mr. David Wayne Brown
Mr. David Wayne Brown, 47, of 3043 N. Terry's Bridge Road, Halifax died
Saturday at his home. He was born in Halifax County on December 22,
1959, son of the late Donald Aylor Brown and Annie Belle Perkins Brown.
He is survived by two sisters, Shirley B. Satterfield and husband
William of Cluster Springs, Doris Jean Tanner of South Boston; one
brother, George Allen Brown and wife Patricia of Winston-Salem, NC;
five nieces, Kim Bullis, Donna Dahn, Melanie Brown, Chasity Myers,
Jennifer Brown and six nephews, Rev. Michael Allen, Darrin Allen,
Donald M. Brown, Jason Brown, Donald Brown, Shawn Tanner.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 25 at 11:00 a.m. at
Trinity Holiness Church with Rev. Michael Allen officiating. The
family will receive friends at 5134 Huell Matthews Highway, Cluster
Springs. Memorials may be directed to the Gideon Memorial Bible Plan.
Mr. Charlie Oakley Logan
Mr. Charlie Oakley Logan, 85, of 1060 Duck Trail, Halifax died
Saturday, August 18, 2007 at his home. He was born in Halifax County
on December 20, 1921, son of the late Mr. Arthur Garfield Logan and
Mrs. Nannie Easley Loan. He was married to the late Mrs. Charity
Williams and was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church and was a World
War II Army veteran.
He is survived by one step-daughter, Mrs. Doris A. Thorn of Temple
Hills, MD; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Pounds of Halifax and Mrs. Mattie
Hidleburg of Philadelphia, PA; one brother, Mr. James Logan of
Philadelphia, PA; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; five
sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, two devoted nieces, Ms. Shari St.
Romain and Ms. Linda Logan; other relatives and friends. He was
preceded in death by one step-son, Mr. Junior Lee Williams, three
sisters, Ms. Lucy Logan, Ms. Laura Logan and Ms. Nannie Ellen Logan and
two brothers, Mr. John Buck Logan, Sr. and Mr. Herman Logan.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 24 at 11:00 a.m. at New
Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Ronnie D. Clark officiating. Burial
will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors by American
Legion Post 99. The family will receive friends tonight from 7:00-8:00
p.m. at Crawford House Chapel, Halifax.
Mrs. Ellie Snead Francis
Mrs. Ellie Snead Francis, 97, of Powhatan, formerly of Halifax County,
died Monday, August 20, 2007 at the St. Francis Medical Center in
Midlothian. She was born December 12, 1909 in Halifax County, daughter
of Lewis Sidney Snead and Martha Powell Snead and was married to the
late Novella Edward Francis. She was a member of Fine Creek Baptist
Church, Powhatan.
She is survived by one son, Mr. Bryan E. Francis of Chesterfield; two
grandchildren, Mr. Mark Francis and Mr. Darrin Francis and wife Linda;
one great-granddaughter, Christine Francis. She was preceded in death
by one daughter, Mrs. Mildred M. Wilson.
Graveside services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at Halifax Memorial
Gardens with Rev. Doug Gibson officiating. Memorials may be directed
to a charity of your choice.
Mrs. Annie Margaret Miller
Mrs. Annie Margaret Miller, 68, of Nathalie died August 16, 2007. She
was the daughter of Mrs. Maude Jennings Boyd and the late Mr. Richard
Boyd.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by two daughters, Martha
Coles (Curtis) and Joyce Forrest, both of Nathalie; three
grandchildren, Chantel, Derrick and Eric Coles; two sisters, Melissa
Hopkins (Bobby) of Jamaica, NY and Minnie Clark (Jimmy) of Nathalie;
seven brothers, Leroy Boyd (Elizabeth) of Newark, DE, Louis Boyd
(Daisy) of Palm Beach, FL, Roger Boyd (Annie Mae) and Willie Lee Boyd
of Bronx, NY, Richard Boyd, Lawrence Boyd (Sarah) of Nathalie and
Bernard Boyd (Fannie) of Lynchburg; three aunts, one brother-in-law,
two sisters-in-law, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Second Buffalo
Baptist Church with Rev. Sandy Palmer officiating. Burial will follow
in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Strickland Saunders
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Strickland Saunders, 88, of 1052 Dixon Lane,
Halifax died Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at the home of her daughter. She
was born in Halifax County on September 28, 1918, daughter of the late
Arthur Linwood Strickland and Ada Lillian Crews Strickland. She was a
member of First Baptist Church of Millstone.
She is survived by three daughters, Frances Flournoy and husband Phil
of West Chester, PA, Doris Annibale of Arlington, Jeanette Chaney and
husband Bill of Halifax; four sisters, Lenwood Guthrie of Nathalie,
Alice Strickland of Tulsa, OK, Spotswood Davis of Nathalie, Jean Oakes
of Alton; six grandchildren, Philip Flournoy and wife Edie, Douglas
Flournoy and wife Lori, Catherine Chaney Gillie and husband Bryant,
Virginia Annibale Worden and husband Eli, Christopher Annibale and wife
Sara, Daryl Montgomery and wife Lynn; six great-grandchildren, one
step-great-grandchild, other relatives and friends. She was preceded
in death by a son, Cecil Saunders and a daughter, Jackie Richardson.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 25 at 11:00 a.m. at
First Baptist Church of Millstone with Rev. Bob Watts and Rev. Ron Rhew
officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family
will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home on Friday from 7:00-8:30
p.m. Memorials may be directed to Halifax Regional Hospice, 2204
Wilborn Avenue, South Boston.
Ruth Wade Smith
Ruth Wade Smith, 93, of Elmwood Avenue, Lynchburg
formerly of Nathalie, died Tuesday August 21, 2007 at Lynchburg Health
and Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of the late George Thaxton
Smith.
She was born in Halifax County, March 19, 1914, daughter of the late
William Allen Wade and Mazzie DeJarnette Wade and was married to the
late George Thaxton Smith. She was a member of Clover Bottom Baptist
Church, a member of the Rebekah's and a former employee of the Odd
Fellows Home in Lynchburg.
She is survived by two sons, Louis T. Smith and wife Jane of Richmond,
Benny W. Smith and wife Sandra of Nathalie; one daughter, Iris Faye
Franklin and husband Harry of Spout Springs; 15 grandchildren; 19
great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded
in death by a son, John Curtis Smith.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 24 at
Clover Bottom Baptist Church by the Rev. Frank Casper and the Rev.
Donald Proctor. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The
family will receive friends tonight from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Henderson
Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Brookneal.
Henry Samuel Oakley, Sr
Henry Samuel Oakley, Sr., 81, of 3203 Old Cluster Springs Road, South
Boston died Wednesday, August 22, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
He was born December 20, 1965 in Halifax County, son of the late
Johnnie Samuel Oakley and Lizzie Kathryn Conner Oakley and was married
to Grace Gravitt Oakley. He was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army in
the Pacific Theater during WWII, attended Smith-Deal-Massey Business
School and his career included that of a farmer, tobacco auctioneer,
and owner of construction, insulation and real estate companies. He
was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church, VFW Post 8243 and American
Legion Post 8.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Henry Samuel Oakley,
Jr. and wife Bessie of Butner, NC; three daughters, Libby Carolyn
Carlson and husband Bill of Yorktown, Trilby Lynn and husband Phil of
Newport News and Kathy Westwood and husband Mike of North Wales, PA;
one sister, Esther Loftis of Newark, DE; one brother, Walter Oakley of
South Boston; eight grandchildren, Trilby Hatchell, Melissa Carlson,
Heather Lee and husband Beau, John Westwood and fiance Cristina Roig,
Rob Westwood, Chris Lynn and wife Lisa, Stacy Hurley and husband Matt
and Brittany Oakley; three great-grandchildren, Ashley and Bryce
Hatchell, Phillip Samuel Lynn. He was preceded in death by six sisters
and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 25 at 11:00 a.m. at
Black Walnut Baptist Church with Rev. Raymond Wooten officiating.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive
friends Friday from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home. Memorials
may be directed to Black Walnut Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box
20, Cluster Springs, VA 24535.
