Obituaries
Mr. H. Guy Faris, Jr. of Fort Myers, FL, formerly of South Boston, died
Sunday, December 23, 2007 in North Fort Myers, Florida. Born November
29, 1918 in South Boston, he was 89 at the time of his death and was
the son of the late H. Guy Faris, Sr. and Lucy Faris. He was married to
Mary Towles Faris.
Mr. Faris was a retired merchant and served for many years as the
director of the local VASAP office. He was a member of Trinity
Episcopal Church.
In addition to his wife of North Fort Myers, he is survived by a
daughter, Frances Faris of North Fort Myers, Florida.
A funeral service will be conducted today, December 27 at 2 p.m. at
Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. Kerry Stewman officiating.
Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. For memorials please consider

Mr. Bobby Wayne Terry
Mr. Bobby Wayne Terry, Sr., 50, of South Boston died Sunday, December
23, 2007 at Granville Medical Center. He was born in Halifax County on
January 2, 1957, a son of Bertha Smith Terry and the late James S.
Terry. He was a former member of the Army National Guard.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by three sons, Bobby Wayne
Terry, Jr. and wife Debbie of Halifax, David Nolan Terry and wife Amy
of Henderson, NC, Charles Dwayne Terry of Cluster Springs; two
grandchildren, Kaitlyn Terry and Angelia Terry; one sister-in-law,
Patricia Lewis Terry of South Boston; one step-son, Daniel Wayne Martin
of South Boston; one road buddy, Terry Bishop; one nephew, Mitch Terry;
special friends, Michele and Kelly Anderson. He was preceded in death
by one brother, James "Pee Wee" Terry.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 29 at Powell Funeral Home
with Rev. John Eure and Rev. Bob Rudman officiating. Burial followed
in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Lucy Jones Duffer
Mrs. Lucy Jones Duffer, 81, of 3227 Cherry Hill Church Road, South
Boston died Monday, December 24, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born December 17, 1926 in Halifax County, a daughter of the
late Robert Jones and Martha Jane Conner Jones and was married to the
late Woodrow Wilson Duffer. She was a member of Cherry Hill United
Methodist Church and retired from Westinghouse Electric Corporation.
She is survived by one daughter, Jane D. Shafferman of Lovettsville;
one son, Robert D. "Bob" Duffer of South Boston; one sister, Hallie
Jones Talley of Buffalo Junction; grandchildren, Zachary B. Shafferman,
Ashley J. Shafferman, Jeremy S. Duffer, Holly N. Duffer. She was
preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Brooks Funeral
Home. Burial will follow in Cherry Hill U.M.C. Cemetery. Memorials
may be directed to the Cherry Hill United Methodist Church.
Mr. Arthur Faulkner
Mr. Arthur Faulkner, 71, of Halifax died Saturday, December 22, 2007.
He was born March 17, 1936, a son of the late James and Nannie Brooks
Faulkner and was married to the late Mary Thaxton Faulkner.
He is survived by two sons, Minister Willie Marble (Joyce), Herbert
Faulkner (Barbara); three daughters, Priscilla Ewell (Lawrence),
Minister Patricia Lewis (Anthony) and Judy Faulkner, all of South
Boston; 15 grandchildren, one God-grandchild, 19 great-grandchildren,
four sisters-in-law, eight brothers-in-law, two nephews, other
relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 28 at 2:00 p.m. at
Fellowship Baptist Church with Pastor R.S. Wimbish officiating. Burial
will follow in the First Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Frank Bowles Anderson
Mr. Frank Bowles Anderson, 74, of 1098 Grubby Road, Halifax died
Monday, December 24, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in
Halifax County on May 1, 1933, a son of the late Archer Aaron Anderson
and Lula Ashby Anderson and was married to Elsie Davis Anderson. He
was a U.S. Navy Veteran having served in the Korean Conflict, a member
of American Legion Post 8, VFW and Woodmen of the World.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one sister, Mollie A. Conner
of Newport News; one brother, Archie A. Anderson, Jr. of Halifax, other
relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 28 at 11:00 a.m. at
Powell Funeral Home with Rev. Raymond Bucklew officiating. Burial will
follow in Union United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will
receive friends tonight from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home.

Mr. Johny Alvin Ligon
Mr. Johny Alvin Ligon, 77, of 1210 Scottsburg Road, Scottsburg died
Monday, December 24, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in
Halifax County on November 11, 1930, a son of the late Hassie E. Ligon
and Grace Watts Ligon and was married to Marjorie Priest Ligon. He was
a member of Scottsburg United Methodist Church, a Navy Veteran of the
Korean Conflict and a member of VFW and a Mason with Lodge #26.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Kathy
Ligon-Brooks of Virginia Beach and Karen L. Imperial of Roanoke; two
sons, Keith V. Ligon and Johny E. Ligon, both of Scottsburg; eight
grandchildren, Wendy L. Smith, Jeremy John Ligon, Nicholas Paul Brooks,
Luke V. Ligon, Leah B. Ligon, Brianne L. Imperial, Alexandra Priest
Brooks, Brooke N. Imperial; one sister, Corine Throckmorton of Orange;
three brothers, Billy W. Ligon, Alfred D. Ligon and Aubery G. Ligon,
all of Scottsburg. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ed,
Marvin, Oscar and Vivian Ligon and one sister, Frances L. Walker.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 28 at 12:30 p.m. at
Powell Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Woodfin officiating. Burial will
follow in Oakland Cemetery with Military Rites. The family will
receive friends tonight from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home.
Miss Virginia Odell Ferrell
Miss Virginia Odell Ferrell, 90, of Richmond, formerly of Clover, died
Saturday, December 22, 2007 at The Laurel of University Park Nursing
Home. She was born in Clover, a daughter of the late John Henry
Ferrell and Hattie Ella Moorefield Ferrell. She was a member of Grove
Avenue Baptist Church, Richmond.
She is survived by one brother, Jerry O. Ferrell of Richmond; three
sisters, Peggy Owen of Yorktown, Doris Clayton of Fayetteville, NC and
Sally Downey of Falls Church, other relatives and friends. She was
preceded in death by three brothers, Jim, Billy and Sam Ferrell.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 28, 2:00 p.m. at Powell
Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Carter officiating. Burial will follow in
Rogers Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends
tonight from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home. Memorials may be
directed to Grove Avenue Baptist Church, 8701 Ridge Road, Richmond, VA

Mrs. Elnora Marie Yancey Dunn
Mrs. Elnora Marie Yancey Dunn of Semora, NC, formerly of Halifax
County, died December 24, 2007 at Brian Center in Yanceyville, NC at
the age of 72. Born in Halifax County on December 22, 1935, she was the
daughter of the late Mr. Ed Yancey and Mrs. Victoria Jennings Yancey.
She was married to Mr. John J. Dunn and was a member of St. Mark
Baptist Church.
Mrs. Dunn is survived by her husband of the home, a son, Mr. John Woody
of South Boston, two brothers, Mr. Henry Yancey of Alton and Mr.
Alexander Yancey of Baltimore, MD, five sisters, Mrs. Helen Goode and
Mrs. Betty Walton, both of Roxboro, NC, Ms. Susie Yancey, Mrs. Mattie
Harris and Mrs. Lillie Williams, all of Baltimore, MD, two
granddaughters, Ms. Dominek Brandon and Ms. Cheryl Woody, three
godchildren whom she raised, nieces, Ms. Linda Jennings and Ms. Vonnie
Jones, both of South Boston and a nephew, Mr. Charlie Walton of
Somerville SC, a brother-in-law, Mr. Bill Goode, a sister-in-law, Mrs.
Frances F. Yancey, two nieces, a nephew and a host of other relatives
and friends.
A funeral service for Mrs. Dunn will be held Saturday, December 29 at
11 a.m. at St. Mark Baptist Church with the Rev. Herbert Pettiford
officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Public viewing
for family and friends will be Friday, December 28 from 12 noon until 6
p.m. at the funeral home and the family will receive friends at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Yancey, 3058 Alton Post Office Road, Alton.
Ms. Dorothy Watkins Garland
Ms. Dorothy Watkins Garland of Lawton, Oklahoma, formerly of Halifax
County, died December 22, 2007 in Oklahoma at the age of 64. Born in
Virgilina on February 8, 1943 to the late Ms. Lou Ella Coleman Watkins
Cunningham and Mr. Therodore Watkins, she was a member of Zion Hill
Baptist Church.
Ms. Garland is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Lepena Fielteau of Lawton,
OK, a son, Mr. Robert J. Clark, II of Lawton, OK, eight grandchildren,
David and Mario Dodson of Lawton, Joel T. Crutchfield, Laqueata,
Jakeia, Jeremiah, Mariah, Isabella Clark, all of Lawton, a brother, Mr.
Leroy Watkins, Sr. of South Boston, a son-in-law, Mr. Frank Fielteau of
Lawton, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Rosa Clark of Lawton and a host of
cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Ms. Garland will be held on Saturday, December 29
at 2 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Lawrence Wilkerson
officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman Family cemetery. Public
viewing for family and friends will be Friday, December 28 from 12 noon
until 6 p.m. at the funeral home and the family is receiving friends at
the Coleman Family residence, 3158 Virgilina Road, Virgilina.
