Obituaries

 Mrs. Helen Crews Jones
Mrs. Helen Crews Jones of 3050 Morton’s Ferry Road, Nathalie died
Saturday, December 22, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born
September 6, 1920 in Halifax County, she was 87 at the time of her
death. She was the daughter of the late Oris Paul Crews and Emma
Elizabeth Stanley Crews and was married to the late A. Franklin Jones.
She was a member of the Providence Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Jones is survived by two daughters, Ann Jones McGuire and husband
Ray of Yanceyville, N.C and Doris Jones Emerson of Nathalie and a son,
Cecil E. Jones of Nathalie, two sisters, Pauline Wagstaff of Skipwith
and Elizabeth Allgood of Danville, nine grandchildren and eight great
grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, December 26 at 2 p.m. at
Providence Presbyterian Church cemetery with the Rev. Jeff Jones
officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following
the service and at her home on Monday from 12 noon to 6 p.m. For
memorials, please consider the Triangle Volunteer Fire Department.
 
Mr. Robert "Bob" Gwyn Whittington,
Mr. Robert "Bob" Gwyn Whittington, 64, of Allen, TX died December 20,
2007 in Plano, TX.  He was born August 4, 1943 in Ashland, West
Virginia, a son of the late Ambrose Gwyn and Daisy Virginia (Brown)
Whittington and was married to Alcie White.  He was retired from the
U.S. Army where he served his country in the telecommunications field
and was a member of the elite USACEEIA Team.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Brenda Carpenter
and husband Randy Barnard of McKinney, TX; sons, Robert Whittington,
Jr. and wife Inez of McKinney, TX, Anthony Whittington and wife Tammy
of McKinney, TX and Kevin Mark Whittington; grandchildren, Jessica
Morgan, Joshua Mitchell, Annabelle Marie and Robert Anthony
Whittington, Madison Haley Barnard, Wayne and Dustin Watson; sister,
Loretta Jenkins of South Boston; and brother, Michael Whittington of
South Boston.
Funeral services were held Sunday at noon at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow
Chapel with interment in Ridgeview Memorial Park.  Memorials may be
directed to The American Heart Association, 1615 N. Stemmons Fwy.,
Dallas, TX 75201 or American Diabetes Association, 4100 Alpha Road
#100, Dallas, TX 75244.
 
INEZ G. WINSTEAD
 
SUFFOLK -  Inez Gosney Winstead, 90, of Proctor Street, died Friday,
Dec. 21, 2007, in a Suffolk hospital.  A native of South Boston,
Virginia, she was a retired sales clerk at Ballard and Smith Dept.
Store, a member of Oxford United Methodist Church, United Methodist
Women, Junto Women's Club, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the BPOE of
Suffolk, and was an avid golfer and bridge player.  Inez was also an
accomplished artist.
    Survivors include three children, Patricia Outland and husband
Leonard, Jennifer Bradshaw and husband Dwight, and Kemper Winstead and
wife Mary, all of Suffolk; one sister, Lois Newman and one brother,
Grayson Gosney, both of South Boston; six grandchildren, Trip Outland
and wife Beth, John Outland and wife Kim, Patty Mizelle and husband
Barry, Robbie Bradshaw and wife Megan, Arthur Bradshaw and wife Brenda,
and Kemp Winstead and fiancee Melissa; seven great-grandchildren,
Brittany and Leo Outland, Parker and Sarah Outland, and Tyler, Brooke
and Ian Mizelle, and many nieces and nephews.
    A funeral service was held on Sunday, Dec. 23 at 2 p.m. in Oxford
UMC with the Rev. Edward Johnson officiating.  Burial followed in the
Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be
made to the American Cancer Society, Suffolk Chapter or Oxford United
Methodist Church, 601 West Washington St., Suffolk, VA 23434.

 

 Mr. Melvin J. “Pete” Conner
Mr. Melvin J. “Pete” Conner of 1734 Norwood Avenue, South Boston died
December 21, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born in Halifax County
on May 29, 1925, he was 82 at the time of his death. He was the son of
the late Melvin Belt Conner, Sr. and Martha Jones Conner and was
married to Dorothy Hall Conner. He was a member of the Main Street
United Methodist Church, the American Legion Post 8 and was a World War
II Army veteran. He was a retired supervisor with JP Stevens.
Mr. Conner is survived by his wife of the home, a step daughter,
Dorothy C. Foushee of Roxboro, NC, two step sons, Gregory T. Crenshaw
and wife Marlene of Pinehurst, NC and Mark S. Crenshaw and wife, Bonnie
of Halifax, two sisters, Daisy “Boogie” Milam and Clara Ann “Bonnie”
Conner, both of South Boston, two brothers, Dinky Conner and wife,
Elsie and William John Conner and wife, Shirley, all of South Boston,
eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in
death by one son, Dennis Wayne Conner, three sisters, Rosa Elizabeth
Green, Dora Lee Propst and Shirley Jean Puryear and two brothers,
Andrew Plumber “Mutt” Conner and Richard Samuel “Big Boy” Conner.
A funeral service for Mr. Conner will be conducted on Thursday,
December 27 at 2 p.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church with the
Rev. Ed Rigg officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge cemetery with
military rites. The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home
on Wednesday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. and at other times at his home. For
memorials, please consider the Main Street United Methodist Building
Fund.
 Mrs. Willie Bolls Coleman
Mrs. Willie Bolls Coleman of 4116 Dryburg Road, Scottsburg died
Thursday, December 20, 2007 at her home at the age of 54. Born in
Vicksburg, MS on November 1, 1943 to Mr. Tom Bolls and Mrs. Hazel
Bolls, she was married to Mr. Major E. Coleman and was a member of
Spanish Grove Baptist Church in Scottsburg.
Mrs. Coleman is survived by her husband, three daughters, Mrs. Yolanda
Davis of South Boston, Mrs. Charlene Chavis-Randolph of Farmville and
Ms. Cassandra Coleman of Scottsburg, a son, Mr. Melvin Chavis, Jr. of
Scottsburg, her parents, a sister, Mrs. Florence Smith of Browns Hill,
NJ, five brothers, Mr. Melvin Bolls, Mr. Robert Bolls, Mr. Sonny Bolls
and Mr. Lawrence Bolls, all of Vicksburg, MS and Mr. Joseph Bolls of
Chicago, IL, 11 grandchildren, two sons-in-law, Mr. Melvin Davis of
South Boston and Mr. James Randolph of Farmville, two aunts, two step
daughters, Ms. Rita Kenny and Ms. Rosalind Kenny, a stepson, Mr. Major
Kenny, Jr., five sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, devoted friends,
Mrs. Olivia Banks of Clover, Mrs. Nancy Sweeney of Halifax, Mr. Charlie
Wiley of Scottsburg and Mrs. Pat Williams of Mississippi and a host of
nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death
by a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Melissa Chavis.
A funeral service for Mrs. Coleman will be held on Thursday, December
27 at 2 p.m. at Spanish Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie
Womack officiating and Rev. William Coleman as eulogist. Burial will
follow in the church cemetery. Public viewing for the family and
friends will be on Wednesday, December 26 from 12 noon until 6 p.m. at
Jeffress Funeral Home and the family will receive friends at the home,
4116 Dryburg Road, Scottsburg.

 

 Mrs. Jeannette Green Wyatt
Mrs. Jeannette Green Wyatt of 2115 Ridge Street, South Boston died
December 21, 2007 at VCU-MCV Medicla Center in Richmond at the age of
63. Born in Halifax County on May 20, 1944, she was the daughter of Mr.
Johnnie Green and the late Mrs. Burlean Threet Green and was married to
Mr. Francis Lee Wyatt. She was a member of First Baptist Church of
Ferry Street and was a former employee of Tultex, Inc.
Mrs. Wyatt is survived by her husband of the home, two daughters, Ms.
LaTeisha Drane and Ms. LaTasha Drane, both of South Boston, three sons,
Mr. Bryant Wyatt of Fort Lee, Mr. Rodney Wyatt and Mr. Jared Wyatt,
both of South Boston, her father of South Boston, two sisters, Mrs.
Pauline Robinson of Newark, NJ and Ms. Deanna Green of Institute, WV,
four brothers, Mr. Joe Green of Washington, DC, Mr. Earl Green and Mr.
Calvin Green, both of South Boston and Mr. Thomas Green of Danville,
four grandchildren, two step grandchildren, a daughter-in-law, Mrs
Stephanie Wyatt, a devoted cousin, Ms. Patricia Bailey of South Boston
and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mrs. Wyatt will be conducted on Friday, December
28 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Ferry Street with burial
following in the Memorial Baptist Church cemetery. The family is
receiving friends at the home, 2115 Ridge Street, South Boston.
