 Mr. Andrew Tucker
Mr. Andrew Tucker, 68, of 1050 Bane Street, South Boston died Friday,
December 14, 2007 at Woodview Nursing Home.  He was born in Halifax
County on September 27, 1939, a son of the late Mr. Dennis Tucker and
Mrs. Mary Lou Stovall Tucker.  He was a member of Mt. Pleasant C.M.E.
Church.
He is survived by three aunts, Mrs. Irene Edmonds of South Boston and
Mrs. Eltea Overby and Mrs. Hallie Stovall, both of Halifax; a devoted
friend, Mr. Atkins Hart, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Crawford House
Chapel, Halifax with Elder William Howerton officiating.  Burial will
follow at Mt. Pleasant C.M.E. Church Cemetery.  The family will receive
friends at the home, 1050 Bane Street, Lot 322, South Boston.

 

 Mr. Henry Hatcher Crenshaw
Mr. Henry Hatcher Crenshaw, Jr., 54, of 1111 Hummingbird Lane, South
Boston died Monday, December 17, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He
was born in Danville on January 21, 1953, a son of the late Henry
Hatcher Crenshaw, Sr. and Sally Moore Crenshaw and was married to
Sandra Griffin Crenshaw.  He was a member of Oak Level Presbyterian
Church and was a retired Lieutenant with the Virginia Department of
Corrections.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son and his wife, Henry
Hatcher Crenshaw, III and wife Jennifer of Elmore, AL; one step-son,
Robert Brian Rivers of Richmond; four grandchildren, Stephen Crenshaw,
Austin Crenshaw, Sevannah Crenshaw and Hayley Wakefield; and his
adoring dogs, Penny and Bosco.
Funeral services will be held today at 1:00 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home
Chapel with Rev. Ed Melvin officiating.  Burial will follow in Oak
Level Presbyterian Church Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to Oak
Level Volunteer Fire Department, c/o Jerry Moore, Treasurer, 2080 Swain
Road, Halifax, VA 24558.

 

 Mr. Jack Autry Guill
Mr. Jack Autry Guill, 70, of 5224 Green Level Road, Scottsburg died
Monday, December 17, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He was born
March 1, 1937 in Halifax County, a son of Orpha Snead Guill and the
late Joseph Guill.  He was a member of Fork Baptist Church and was a
retired employee of U.S. Plywood.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Wanda Guill
Chandler and husband Mike of South Boston, Linda Guill Francis and
husband Daryl of Chester; one sister, Mariam "Sweetpea" Goodwin of
Scottsburg; grandchildren, Ashley Chandler, Sara Francis, Joe Francis
and great-grandchildren Madison and Chandler Watkins.  He was preceded
in death by two brothers, Charlie Lee "C.L." Guill and William Horace
"Sam" Guill.
Graveside services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Clover Cemetery
with Rev. Jeaux Simmons officiating.  Memorials may be directed to

or Fork Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 5202 Falkland Road, Scottsburg,

 Ms. Elvira Sydnor Faulkner
Ms. Elvira Sydnor Faulkner, 70, of 709 Easley Street, South Boston died
December 15, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  She was born in
Halifax County on July 18, 1937, a daughter of the late Mr. Robert Lee
Sydnor and Mrs. Ellen C. Coleman and was a member of First Baptist
Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Mary Ellen Nealous of South Boston;
three sons, Mr. Michael Sydnor and Mr. William Sydnor, both of South
Boston, Mr. Jerome Sydnor of Baltimore, MD; seven grandchildren, four
great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ms. Eva Canada, Ms. Emma Jane
Hamlett and Ms. Arminta Lowery, all of South Boston; one brother, Mr.
Willie "Pete" Sydnor of Salem; two daughters-in-law, one son-in-law,
other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by three
sisters, Laura Ann Palmer, Alice Bee Sydnor and Phibbie Ann Sydnor.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 21 at 11:00 a.m. at
First Baptist Church, Ferry Street with District Elder Bernard Wilkins
officiating.  Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.  The family
will receive friends at the home, 709 Easley Street, South Boston.

 

 Mrs. Annie Mae Chappell Moore
Mrs. Annie Mae Chappell Moore, 103, of South Boston died Monday,
December 17, 2007 at Berry Hill Nursing Home.  She was born in Halifax
County on May 27, 1904, daughter of the late Henry Tucker Chappell and
Alvira Chappell and was married to the late George Moore.  She was a
member of Banister Hill C.M.E. Church.
She is survived by a God-daughter, Mrs. Bernice Younger-Gomes; two
special friends, Mr. Patrick and Mrs. Shirley Jennings; other relatives
and friends.
Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Banister Hill
C.M.E. Church with Rev. R.S. Wimbish conducting the service.  Burial
will follow in the church cemetery.

 

Mr. Meredith Tyler "Skeeter" Duffer 
Mr. Meredith Tyler "Skeeter" Duffer, 65, of 3032 L.P. Bailey Memorial
Highway, Halifax died Tuesday, December 18, 2007 at Halifax Regional
Hospital.  He was born in Halifax County on June 9, 1942, son of the
late Willard Fowlkes Duffer, Sr. and Agnes Cassada Duffer and was
married to Catherine Mason Duffer.  He was a member and deacon of Ellis
Creek Baptist Church, a Mason with the Halifax Lodge #96, a U.S. Army
Veteran, a member of the American Legion Post 8, past president of the
Halifax Dixie Youth Baseball Association and was a retired cost analyst
with Dan River Mills.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, David Dewell
Duffer and wife Kay, and Raymond Tyler Duffer and wife Annette, all of
Nathalie; three grandchildren, Tyler Duffer, Amanda Duffer and Meredith
Duffer; and one brother, Willard Fowlkes "Buddy" Duffer, Jr. and wife
Mrylene of Houston, TX.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 21 at 2:00 p.m. at Ellis
Creek Baptist Church with Rev. "Dib" Mills officiating.  Burial will
follow in the church cemetery with Masonic Rites.  The family will
receive friends tonight from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home.
Memorials may be directed to Halifax Masonic Lodge #96 Building Fund,
Hilary Glidewell Scholarship Fund or a charity of your choice.

 

 Mrs. Wynema Steele "Peggy" Gilmore
Mrs. Wynema Steele "Peggy" Gilmore of 2014 Vaughan Street, South Boston
died Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born
in Elkin, North Carolina on December 15, 1919, she was 88 at the time
of her death. She was the daughter of the late Newton Montgomery Steele
and Nancy Katherine Crouse Steele and was married to the late J. W.
(Whitey) Gilmore.
Mrs. Gilmore is survived by a special nephew, Sammie S. Adams of South
Boston and numerous other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death
by five sisters: Dorothy S. Laffoon, Emma Sue S. Holcomb, Jessie S.
Holcomb, Ruby S. Cockerham, Reba S. Adams Laster, and a brother Robert
C. Steele.
A funeral service for Mrs. Gilmore will be conducted on Friday,
December 21 at 12 noon at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Coy
Terry officiating. Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens. The
family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home on Thursday evening
from 7 until 8:30 p.m. For memorials, please consider the Lynchburg
General Hospital Auxiliary Association.

 

 Mrs. Rosa Martin Kincaid
Mrs. Rosa Martin Kincaid of 1019 John Logan Trail, Clover died Tuesday,
December 18, 2007 at her home. Born in Halifax County on August 25,
1917, she was 90 at the time of her death. She was the daughter of the
late Oliver George Martin and Kate Whitmore Martin and was married to
the late Benjamin Franklin Kincaid.
Mrs. Kincaid is survived by a daughter, Hazel Lacks of Clover, three
sons, Lewis Martin of Drakes Branch, Otis Martin of Nathalie and Lewis
Whirley of Martinsville and six grandchildren, Archie Lacks, Jr. of
Clover, Patsy Nelson and Mark Lacks, both of South Boston, Angela
Buchannan of Oxford, NC, Jennifer Boone of Henderson, NC, Allison Munn
of Wilmington, NC, fourteen great grandchildren and one great great
grandchild.
A funeral service for Mrs. Kincaid will be conducted on Friday,
December 21 at 2 p.m. at Providence Presbyterian Church with the Rev.
Jeff Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The
family will receive friends at the home, 1019 John Logan Trail, Clover.

 

 Mrs. Edwina Bailey Sanford
Mrs. Edwina Bailey Sanford of 1706 North Main Street, South Boston died
Monday, December 17, 2007 at her home at the age of 47. Born in New
York, NY on July 30, 1960, she was the daughter of Mr. Bernard Womack
and Ms. Lillian Torian. She was married to Mr. Albert Sanford and was a
member of First Baptist Church of Ferry Street.
Mrs. Sanford is survived by her husband of the home, two sons, Mr.
Savaughn Bailey and Mr. Bruce Jackson, Jr., both of South Boston, two
daughters, Mrs. Quana Terry and Ms. Shiqutta Sanford, both of South
Boston, her father and her mother, two brothers, Mr. Christopher Torian
and Mr. Charles Torian, both of South Boston, four grandchildren and a
host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mrs. Sanford will be held Sunday, December 23 at
2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Ferry Street with Rev. Wallace Pierce
officiating. Burial will follow in the Piney Grove Baptist Church
cemetery. The family will receive friends at Jeffress Funeral Home from
5 until 6 p.m. on Saturday evening and at other times at the home, 1706
North Main Street, South Boston.
