 Mr. Larry Wayne Thaxton,
Mr. Larry Wayne Thaxton, Jr., 41, of 2122 Old Cluster Springs Road,
South Boston died Monday, November 26, 2007 at his home.  He was born
in Halifax County on May 23, 1966, a son of Brenda Cole Thaxton and the
late Larry Wayne Thaxton, Sr.  He was married to Candace B. Thaxton,
was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church and was the owner/operator
of Larry Thaxton Trucking, Inc.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by sons, Austin W.
Thaxton and E. Bryce Thaxton and daughters, Brooke E. Thaxton and Erin
P. Thaxton, all of South Boston; a sister, Tammy E. Thaxton of South
Boston and his paternal grandparents, Killis W. and Mary Thaxton of
South Boston.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 28 at Olive Branch
Baptist Church with Rev. Victor Blackwell officiating.  Burial followed
in the church cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to the Halifax
County Cancer Association, P.O. Box 875, South Boston, VA 24592 or

Mr. Guy Edward Guill 
Mr. Guy Edward Guill, 80, of 5223 Green Level Road, Scottsburg died
Monday, November 26, 2007 at the home of his niece.  He was born
September 17, 1927 in Halifax County, a son of the late Charlie Racher
Guill and Mary Will Snead Guill and was a self-employed farmer.
He is survived by two sisters, Ruth G. Heath and Tina G. Barker, both
of Scottsburg; a special friend, Loretta Tharpe of Charlotte County,
and a number of nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death a sister,
Lizzie Snead and brothers Charlie H. Guill, John H. Guill and Joseph W.
Guill.Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home
Chapel with burial to follow in Clover Cemetery.  Memorials may be
directed to Halifax Regional Hospice, 2204 Wilborn Avenue, South
Boston, VA 24592 or Halifax County Cancer Association, P.O. Box 875,
South Boston, VA 24592.

 

 Mrs. Mattie Clark Chaffin,
Mrs. Mattie Clark Chaffin, 91, of 2504 Halifax Road, South Boston died
Monday, November 26, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  She was born
in Campbell County on September 7, 1916, a daughter of the late Douglas
Clark and Mary Kathryn Hubbard Clark and was married to the late Wyatt
Chaffin.  She was a member of First Baptist Church, South Boston.
She is survived by three daughters, Kathryn Chaffin Lawson of South
Boston, JoAnna Chaffin Hughes and husband Robert of South Boston, Pat
Chaffin Hay and husband William of Farmville; seven grandchildren,
Kathryn Chaffin Wills, Joseph Stebbins Lawson, III, Beth Barzack Bush,
Wyatt Barzack, Robert A. Harris, III, Michael Wyatt Harris, John Scott
Harris, and ten great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Friday, November 20 at 2:00 p.m. at
Halifax Memorial Gardens with Rev. Dr. Russell Lee officiating.

Mr. Howard Elvin Elliott,
Mr. Howard Elvin Elliott, 82, died Monday, November 26, 2007 at his
home.  He was the son of Grover Cleveland and Adele Elliott and was
married to Virgie Williamson Elliott.  He served in the U.S. Army
during World War II receiving the Purple Heart, operated Sandy Fork
Snack Stand and Wayside Restaurant and worked for Key Construction and
was a member of Buffalo Baptist Tabernacle, and a former member of
Mecklenburg County Life Saving and Rescue Squad.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Barbara E. Downy
and husband Tommy of Buffalo Junction, Judy E. Barker and husband
Teddie of Scottsburg; and grandchildren, Amy Stallings, Tracey Powell,
Chad Downey, Timmy Barker and Cameron Elliott; five
great-grandchildren; sisters, Nora Jean Talley of Clayton, NC, Margie
Hite of Freeman, Rebecca Williams of Chesterfield, Willie Faye
Breedlove and Carolyn Guthrie, both of Richmond.  He was preceded in
death by a son, Mac Elliott.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral
Home with Rev. William Hoover Coghill officiating.  Burial followed in
Buffalo Baptist Tabernacle Cemetery.
 
Charlotte Ann Bryson Martin
Charlotte Ann Bryson Martin, 75, of 1047 Plato Road, Vernon Hill, died
November 25.  She is survived by her husband of 55 years Wallace Martin
of the home, sons Willard Martin of Washington, NC, and Richard Martin
of Raleigh, NC, and daughter Carolyn Martin of Baton Rouge, LA;
brothers Thaddeus Bryson of Fletcher, NC and Frederick Bryson of Bryson
City, NC and Montreal, QC, Canada; sister Gail Elliott of Bryson City,
NC; grandsons David Furr of New York City, Jeremy Martin and Michael
Martin both of Wilmington, NC; and granddaughter Katherine Martin of
Raleigh, NC.
Graveside services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at Swain Memorial
Park, Bryson City, NC.  Memorials may be directed to The Nature
Conservancy, national or state organizations (www.nature.org) or Baton
Rouge Area Foundation (www.braf.org)
 
 Louise Bailey
Louise Bailey of Jersey City, NJ, formerly of Halifax County, died
Saturday, November 24, 2007.  She was the daughter of the late Tom and
Emily Childress and was married to the late Samuel Bailey, Jr.
She is survived by her children, Barbara Petry, John Childress, Bruce
Davis, Synthia Fletcher and Sandra Bailey-Young; siblings, Robert Sr.,
Lenard and Ernest, Martha Ferrell, Ruth Crite, Ruby Wesson, Annie
Catherine, 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law,
Nannie Childress, Ailene Johnston, James Crite, niece Cora Grimes.  She
was preceded in death by a son, Arnold Davis.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 1 at Mt. Pleasant
C.M.E. Church with burial in the church cemetery.  The family will
receive friends Friday, November 30 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Dunn and
Sons Funeral Home, Halifax.
 
 
Mrs. Bernice Perkins Spencer
Mrs. Bernice Perkins Spencer, 79, of 2012 Crystal Hill Road, Crystal
Hill died Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at Duke University Hospital,
Durham, NC.  She was born in Halifax County on May 12, 1928, daughter
of the late Joseph Perkins and Mamie Simmons Perkins.  She was married
to George Louis Spencer and was a member of Crystal Hill Southern
Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Pamela
Spencer Jennings and husband John of Raleigh, NC; one son, Michael
Louis Spencer and wife Patricia of Crystal Hill; two brothers, Thurman
Perkins and Wesley "Shorty" Perkins, both of Halifax; three
grandchildren, Chase Jennings, Jason Spencer and wife Amy, Travis
Spencer and one great-grandchild, Hudson Spencer; and a special family
friend, Thomas Miller.
Graveside services will be held Friday, November 30 at 2:00 p.m. at the
Spencer Family Cemetery at Crystal Hill with Rev. Bob Hurd officiating.
  The family will receive friends at her home.  Memorials may be
