Obituaries


Ms. Mae Ella Henderson

Ms. Mae Ella Henderson, 87, of 1108 Lowery Liberty Road, Nathalie died
Monday, November 19, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  She was born
in Halifax County on June 6, 1920, a daughter of the late Mr. Albert
Henderson and Mrs. Ada Crews Henderson.  She was a member of Banister
Hill C.M.E. Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Verna Cornelious of Woodbridge
and Mrs. Gladys Womack of Nathalie; one sister, Ms. Frances Henderson
of Halifax; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, three
great-great-grandchildren; one son-in-law, Mr. Herman Womack; one
sister-in-law, Mrs. Florine Henderson; a devoted friend, Mrs. Lucinda
Coleman, other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by one
daughter, Mrs. Elma L. Carden.
Funeral services were held Friday, November 23 at Banister Hill C.M.E.
Church with Rev. Evon Bush officiating.  Burial followed in the church
cemetery.

 

Mr. Lenton Alvin "Al" Rice
Mr. Lenton Alvin "Al" Rice, 77, of Halifax, died Wednesday, November
21, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He was born in Richmond County
on February 9, 1930, a son of the late Lenton Rice and Essie Davenport
Rice and was married to Gaye Cole Rice.  He was a member of Dan River
Baptist Church, formerly  a member of Turbeville Ruritan Club, was a
United States Marine veteran, a retired contractor and, along with his
wife, was manager of Centerville's Reese's Farm Fresh Produce Market.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Bill Rice and wife
Teresa of Sutherlin, Jim Brinner and wife Kim of Scottsburg; one
daughter, Sara Reese and husband Don of Scottsburg; one brother, Emory
Rice and wife Margaret of Lancaster; five grandchildren, Billy Rice,
Will Reese, Sara Beth Reese, Kent Reese and Jimmy Brinner.  He was
preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Wooding Rice.
Funeral services were held Saturday, November 24 at Powell Funeral Home
Chapel with Rev. Doug Gibson and Rev. Bryant Wilbourne officiating.
Burial followed in Dan River Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

Mr. Bernard Lee Creasy, 
Mr. Bernard Lee Creasy, 60, of Halifax died Wednesday, November 21,
2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He was born in Halifax County on
January 8, 1947, a son of the late Ray Garland Creasy, Sr. and Etta Lee
Conner Creasy and was married to Dixie Francis Creasy. He was a member
of Mountain Road Baptist Church and was a United States Army veteran.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by five daughters, Dee Dee
Chattin and husband Rick of Alton, Tammy Creasy Hayes and husband
Ronnie of Halifax, Vickie Spain of South Boston, Ginger Owen and
husband Chris of Halifax, Penny Creasy Bolin and husband Kenneth of
Halifax; one son, Bernard Lee Creasy, Jr. and wife Christina of
Halifax; 13 grandchildren; four sisters, Marion C. Morris of Danville,
Barbara C. Snead of South Boston, Becky Echols of Danville and Debbie
Root of Waynesboro.  He was preceded in death by one sister, Ruby
Hughes, one brother, Ray Garland Creasy, Jr. and one grandchild, Joseph
Bolin.
Funeral services were held Saturday, November 24 at Mountain Road
Baptist Church with Rev. Andy Patterson officiating.  Burial followed
in the church cemetery.

 

Mr. William Davis Lawson
Mr. William Davis Lawson, 69, of Lincoln Drive, South Boston died
Monday, November 19, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He was born in
Halifax County on April 18, 1938, a son of the late Ms. May Jean Lawson
and Mr. Benjamin Newman and was married to Mrs. Nannie Duncan Lawson.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Shirley
M. Tucker of South Boston; one step-son, Mr. Robert "Butch" Harris of
Burlington, NC; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two
brothers, Mr. Mark Lawson and Mr. Jimmy Holt, both of South Boston;
four sisters, Mrs. Ross Wyatt, Mrs. Ida Brandon, Mrs. Christian Jackson
and Mrs. Margaret Chandler, all of South Boston; two sisters-in-law,
Mrs. Inez Otis and Mrs. Yvonne Head; one uncle, Mr. Lawrence Newman;
two aunts, Mrs. Beatrice Claiborne and Mrs. Ester Chalmers, other
relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, November 24 at Crawford House
Chapel with Minister June Claiborne officiating.

 

 Mr. Kevin Cornelius Watkins
Mr. Kevin Cornelius Watkins, 29, of Yuma, Arizona, formerly of Halifax
County, died Sunday, November 18, 2007.  He was born in Halifax County
on September 3, 1978, a son of Pastor Harold Watkins and Mrs. Marian
Wilkins Watkins.  He was a member of New Corinth Baptist Church and
White Oak Fork Baptist Church and was a United States Marine Corp
veteran.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one daughter, Ms. Keyana
Cierra Watkins of Yuma, AZ; one son, Mr. Sean Robert Watkins of Yuma,
AZ; one sister, Mrs. Melanie Word of South Boston; one brother, Mr.
Adrian Watkins of Danville; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Evaughn
Wilkins of Virgilina; his brother-in-law, Mr. Allen Word; devoted
friends Virginia, Marcos and Erica Villaneura, Yuma, AZ; one niece, one
nephew, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, November 24 at White Oak Fork
Baptist Church with Rev. Glenn Faulkner officiating.  Burial followed
in the Watkins family cemetery.

 

 Mrs. Winnie Saunders Cross
Mrs. Winnie Saunders Cross, 90, of South Boston died Friday, November
23, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  She was born in Rockingham
County, NC on January 3, 1917, a daughter of the late Alec Bruce
Saunders and Sarah Davis Saunders and was married to the late Robert
Lewis Cross.  She was a member of Center United Church of Christ,
worked at Happy Home Elementary School as a teacher and dietitian, was
a dietitian at Halifax Regional Hospital, the South Boston Hospital and
the Woodview and played golf at Greens Folly Golf Club.
She is survived by one son, Robert "Bob" Lewis Cross, Jr. and wife
Hazel of Danville; one daughter, Nancy Johnston and husband John of
South Boston; two granddaughters, Sheri Cross Troxler and husband Gary,
Ellen Page Cross Wingate and husband Fred; one grandson, John Linwood
Johnston, Jr.; five great-grandchildren, Sarah and Jenny Troxler,
Freddie Wingate, Ashley Ellen Johnston, Taylor Snyder.  She was
preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services were held Sunday, November 25 at Powell Funeral Home
Chapel with Rev. William Pyle and Rev. John Wilder officiating.  Burial
followed in Happy Home United Church of Christ Cemetery, Ruffin, NC.
 

 Ms. Carrie Elizabeth Faulkner

Ms. Carrie Elizabeth Faulkner, 81, of South Boston died Wednesday,
November 21, 2007 at Berry Hill Nursing Home.  She was born in Halifax
County on November 3, 1926, a daughter of Ms. Mary Faulkner Ferrell and
was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church.
She is survived by three brothers, Mr. John Lee Faulkner of South
Boston, Mr. Charlie Faulkner of Newport News and Mr. Roosevelt Faulkner
of Orlando, FL; one sister, Mrs. Essie Carrington of South Boston;
three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Dorothy Faulkner, Mrs. Lillie Ferrell and
Mrs. Cynthia Ferrell, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday, November 25 at Zion Hill Baptist
Church with Rev. Jerry Rudd officiating.  Burial followed in the church
cemetery.
 
Mrs. Louise Chandler Coble
 
Burlington – Mrs. Louise Chandler Coble, 87, of Twin Lakes, 100 Wade
Coble Drive, Burlington died at Alamance Regional  Medical Center on
Friday, November 23, 2007 at 3:35 p.m. A native of Mecklenburg County,
VA , she was the wife of the late George Rankin Coble, Sr. and the
daughter of Joe Beale Chandler and Esma Clement Chandler, both
deceased.  She was a teacher, deacon, elder and trustee of Graham
Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Covenant Class of the
Graham Presbyterian Church; awarded a Life Membership in the
Presbyterian Women and a former President of Presbyterian Women; and is
a member of the Leornian Study Club where she served as President. She
was a homemaker and former teacher in Virginia and North Carolina. She
was a principal at 16. She was educated at Virgilina High School, VA,
Longwood College, East Carolina University, and N. C. State
University.  She and George delivered “Meals on Wheels” for
years. Survivors include one son, Mr. George R. “Ran” Coble of Raleigh;
one daughter, Ms. Ellen Clement Coble of Charlotte, NC; two sisters,
Mrs. Spillman (Josephine) Grimsley of Hilton Head, SC,  Mrs. Robert
(Ruth) Llewellyn of South Boston, VA; one brother, Mr. Wallace L.
Chandler of Richmond, VA; and daughter-in-law, Ms. Jane Kendall. She
was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Clayton T. (Laura V.) Mills
of Alexandria, VA and three brothers, Mr. Joe Beale Chandler of South
Boston, VA, Mr. T. Lindy Chandler of Richmond, VA, and Mr. C. Clement
Chandler of South Boston, VA. The Memorial Service will be conducted at
Graham Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at 11:30 am by
Rev. Steve Braswell.   Burial will be at Alamance Presbyterian Church
Cemetery in Guilford County, NC on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at 10:00
am. The family will receive friends following the memorial service in
the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Graham
Presbyterian Church, 216 West Harden Street, Graham, NC 27253; New
Directions International, P.O. Box 2347, Burlington, NC  27216; or to
Meals on Wheels, 508 West Davis Street, Burlington, NC  27215.
Mr. Kenneth Lee Smoot of Hitesburg died Thursday, November 22, 2007 at
the Hunter McQuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond. Born in Halifax
County on July 29, 1946, he was 61 at the time of his death and was the
son of the late Clarence Smoot and the late Alease Midkiff Smoot. He
was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Mr. Smoot is survived by two sisters, Edna Bray of South Boston and
Carol Norman and husband Steve of Gainsville and one brother, Ted Smoot
of Oxford, NC and a number of nephews and nieces, his good friend and
business partner, Ben Hite of Hitesburg, and his good friend and
neighbor "Rosa" of Hitesburg. He was preceded in death by a brother,
James Smoot.
A memorial service was held on Sunday, November 25 at 7 p.m. at Powell
Funeral Home Chapel. For memorials please consider the American Cancer

 Mr. Clarence Melvin Satterfield
Mr. Clarence Melvin Satterfield of 581 Neal Davis Road, Ringgold died
Sunday, November 25, 2007 at his home. Born January 5, 1959 in Halifax
County, he was 48 at the time of his death. He was the son of the late
Charlie Melvin Satterfield and Sally Kate Custer Satterfield and was
married to Judy Martin Satterfield. He was a truck driver in the
logging industry.
Mr. Satterfield is survived by his wife of the home, four sons, Donnie
Wayne Satterfield and wife Kimberly of Sutherlin, Danny Lee
Satterfield, Ronnie Melvin Satterfield and Clarence Junior Satterfield,
all of Ringgold, a sister, Patricia Diane Fielder of South Boston,
three brothers, Charlie Thomas Satterfield and wife, Patricia, Ike
Satterfield and finace, Judy Wilson, all of Ringgold and Lawrence David
Satterfield and wife Penny of Rustsburg and two grandchildren, Kayla
and Deven Satterfield of Sutherlin. He was preceded in death by two
brothers, Melvin Junioor Satterfield and Marvin Wayne Satterfield.
A funeral service for Mr. Satterfield will be conducted at 2 p.m. on
Wednesday, November 28 at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Chad
Branch officiating. Burial will follow in the Floral Hills Memorial
Gardens in Danville. The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral
Home on Tuesday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. and at other times at his home.

Mr. James Webster "Snooks" Collier 
Mr. James Webster "Snooks" Collier, 79, husband of Doris J. Collier,
died Saturday, November 24, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born and
reared in Mecklenburg County, he was the son of Claude H. and Nanie V.
Blanks Collier. Snooks was retired from Key Construction Company. An
outsdoorsman, he loved hunting, fishing and collecting Indian
artifacts, especially arrowheads.
A funeral service for Mr. Collier will be conducted at 2 p.m. on
Tuesday in the chapel at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home with the Rev.
William J. Erps officiating. Interment will follow in Gravel Hill
Cemetery. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Betsy
C. West and her husband, Tim and son, James Edward Collier, all of
Buffalo Junction. Also surviving are grandchidren, Satera Leighann
Collier, Kevin Lee Murphy, Joseph Adam West and his wife, Jen, Kristina
Joyce West and great granddaughter, Harmony Jade West. The family will
receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Monday at Watkins Cooper Lyon
