Mrs. Nancy Jean Fariss Burkhart
Mrs. Nancy Jean Fariss Burkhart, 55, of 1329 Willingham Street, South
Boston died Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born in Pittsburgh, PA on December 13, 1952, a daughter of the
late Jack Fariss and Virginia Heckman Fariss and was married to David
D. Burkhart.In addition to her husband, she is survived by three
daughters, Lori
Ann Wolfe of Breman, OH, Faith L. Giglio of Pittsburgh, PA and Sara M.
Burkhart of South Boston; two sisters, Sharon Mankins of Kingsport, W
VA and Elaine Pisula of Raleigh, NC; two brothers, Gary Fariss of
Minneapolis, MN and Michael Fariss of Pittsburgh, PA; and eight
grandchildren.Memorial services will be held Friday, November 9 at 1:00
p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Andy Lowery officiating.
Mrs. Nina Mae English Deese
Mrs. Nina Mae English Deese, 95, of 3119 Clarkton Road, Nathalie died
Monday, November 5, 2007 at her home. She was born in Hoke County, NC
on November 25, 1911, a daughter of the late Wiley Emmanuel English and
Bessie Ann Stanton English and was married to the late Julian C. Deese,
Sr. She was a member of St. Paschals Catholic Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Patricia D. Crews and husband Kenneth
of Nathalie; one son, Julian C. Deese, Jr. and wife Sandra of
Centralia, WA; one sister, Rosa Lee McDowell of Florence, SC; four
grandchildren, Connie C. Snead, Leslie M. Garvis, Daniel A. Deese,
Damon A. Deese; six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by
one son, Danny M. Deese.
Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home
Chapel with Father John Kloepfer officiating. Burial will follow in
Ellis Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the
Halifax County Cancer Association, P.O. Box 875, South Boston, VA
24592.
Deacon James Bernard Bailey
Deacon James Bernard Bailey, Sr., 77, of 7111 Hunting Creek Road,
Nathalie died Sunday, November 4, 2007 at South Boston Manor. He was
born in Halifax County on July 27, 1930, a son of the late Mr. Howard
Bailey and Mrs. Eliza Cousins Bailey and was married to Mrs. Lorraine
Cousins Bailey. He was a deacon at Bethel Grove Baptist Church and
long time employee of Doss Well Drilling Company.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, Mr. Christopher
L. Bailey of South Boston, Mr. Charles E. Bailey of Red Oak, Mr. Archie
L. Bailey and Mr. Lorenzo D. Bailey, both of Nathalie; nine
grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Mrs.
Sallie M. Bailey and Mrs. Loretta D. Bailey, other relatives and
friends. He was preceded in death by two sons, Mr. James B. Bailey and
Mrs. William Henry Bailey.
A funeral service will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Bethel Grove
Baptist Church with Rev. James Coleman officiating. Burial will follow
in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Helen Hancock Lacks
Mrs. Helen Hancock Lacks, 65, of 1117 James D. Hagood Highway, South
Boston died Sunday, November 4, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She
was born in Halifax County on May 7, 1942, a daughter of the late
Harvey William Hancock and Frances Louise Conner Hancock and was
married to the late Charles Edward Lacks. She was a member of Clover
Baptist Church and was custodian for Raymond Kahler, II of South
Boston.
She is survived by one sister, Minnie Frances Hancock Duffey and
husband James Gray of Randolph; two nieces, Sheila D. Owen and husband
Otis and Theresa Duffey and friend Michael Yates; great-niece and
nephew, Stephanie Owen and A.J. Owen; special friend, Eldridge
Hazelwood. She was preceded in death by two children, Edward Dwayne
Lacks and Brenda Lynn Lacks.
Funeral services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at Powell Funeral
Home Chapel with Rev. Tom Walker officiating. Burial will follow in
Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Mrs. Shirley Ann Loveday
Mrs. Shirley Ann Loveday, 71, of 1182 Gilliam Trail, South Boston died
Monday, November 5, 2007 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She was
born March 24, 1936 in Meherrin, a daughter of the late Walter Nelson
and Ester Newcomb Nelson and was married to Paul Loveday, Sr. She was
a member of Church of God of Prophecy and a bus driver with the Halifax
County School System.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Paul Loveday,
Jr. of South Boston; one daughter, Kathy O. Cook of Danville;
grandchildren, Ronnie Pulliam, Jeanie Pulliam, April Pulliam, Darrell
Pulliam, Jerald Pulliam, Billy Paul Loveday, Jamie Loveday; 10
great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at Church of God of
Prophecy Cemetery with Rev. Steve Byrd officiating.
Mr. Philip "Buddy" Garne
Mr. Philip "Buddy" Garner, 67, of 2031 Lewis Ferrell Road, South Boston
died Sunday, November 4, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was
born in Halifax County on November 6, 1939, son of the late Mr. Dudley
Albert Garner and Mrs. Hattie Ferrell Garner and was a member of New
Vernon Baptist Church and an Army veteran.
He is survived by one brother, Mr. Joel Garner of Jupiter, TN; eight
sisters, Ms. Joyce Garner of District Heights, MD, Ms.
Genette Garner of Detroit, MI, Ms. Shirley Garner, Mrs. Blanche Garner
Hartridge and Mrs. Carolyn Allen, all of Mt. Vernon, NY, Mrs. Annie
Moore of Landover, MD, Mrs. Elaine Palmer and Ms. Lucy Garner, both of
Washington, DC; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death
by one sister, Ms. Bessie Mae Garner.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 10 at 2:00 p.m. at New
Vernon Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Roger Ford officiating. Burial
will follow in the church cemetery with Military Rites. The family
will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
