Obituaries Joan Snow Davis
Marguel Joan Snow Davis, age 65, of 252 Providence Road, Roxboro, died
Friday afternoon, October 27, 2007, at Duke University Medical Center, the
daughter of the late William Thomas Snow and Lessie Mae Roberson Snow..
She was retired from Collins & Aikman Corp. and was a member of North
Roxboro Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, David S. Davis Sr.;
three daughters, Cherri Lamberth Shaffer, Mitzi Lamberth Fonda and
Catrina D. Vaughn; one son, David S. Davis Jr.; two sisters, Linda Snow
Lacks of South Boston, Carolyn Snow Batten and one brother Larry
Snow .Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart
Association, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060. Arrangements are
by Strickland Funeral Home. A memorial services will be conducted at
2 p.m. Monday, October 29, at North Roxboro Baptist Church. .
Mrs. Lisa Culley Newby, 38, of Chatham Road, Halifax died October 23,
2007 at Duke University Hospital. She was born in Halifax County on
April 3, 1969, a daughter of Larry James Culley and Diana Phillips
Culley and was married to Charles Allen Newby. She was a member of
Bethel Baptist Church and was employed as an Emergency Room nurse at
Halifax Regional Hospital.
In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by her
daughter, Haley A. Newby and son, Charles A. Newby, Jr., both of
Halifax; her father-in-law, Harold A. Newby of Bullock, NC; her
mother-in-law, Lonie Hite of Buffalo Junction; and one sister, Cheryl
Culley Wilkerson of Scottsburg. She was preceded in death by her twin
sister, Lori Anne Culley.
Funeral services were held Thursday at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev.
Bob Rudman officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Danny Kaye Haley
Mr. Danny Kaye Haley of Willow Oaks, Apartments, South Boston died
Friday, October 26, 2007 at his home. Born in Halifax County on June 3,
1949, he was 58 at the time of his death. He was a member of Seven Oaks
Baptist Church and worked as a stock clerk for Wal-Mart.
Mr. Haley is survived by two daughters, Cynthia H. Spainhour and
husband, Michael of Halifax and Vicki H. Owen and husband, RG of
Scottsburg and two grandchildren, Makayla Montgomery and Katelyn
Spainhour. Also surviving are five sisters, Estelle Miller and husband,
Pete of Hamilton, OH, Margaret Harris and Melba York and husband, AP,
all of Virginia Beach, Shirley Lee of Norfolk and Nancy Crews of South
Boston and two brothers, Hugh Haley and wife, Dot of Alton and Bill
Haley and wife Gayle of South Boston and a number of nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Jeffrey Jordan Haley
and his mother, Rosa Dunaway Haley and a sister, Frances Haley.
A graveside service for Mr. Haley will be conducted this morning,
Monday, October 29 at 11 a.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery with the Rev. Jack
Stewart officiating. Anyone wishing to give memorials is asked to

Mr. Jessie Wilson Claiborne
Mr. Jessie Wilson Claiborne, 88, of Sutphin Road, South Boston died
October 24, 2007 at Berry Hill Nursing Home. He was born in Halifax
County on April 19, 1919, a son of the late Mr. Jackson Claiborne and
Mrs. Hester Compton Claiborne. He was married to Mrs. Josephine
Edmunds Claiborne and was a member and deacon at Five Fork Baptist
Church. He was a World War II Army veteran and was a retired
self-employed plumber.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Mary
Jackson of Nathalie, Mrs. Delois Brown of Winston-Salem, NC, Ms. Janice
Claiborne of Melborne, FL and Mrs. Barbara Brame of Clinton, MD; three
sons, Mr. Jesse Claiborne, Jr. of San Antonio, TX, Mr. Wayne Claiborne
of Newport News, Mr. Charles Claiborne of Temple Hills, MD; 14
grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; four sons-in-law, Mr. George
Butler, Mr. Willie Jackson, Mr. Larry Brown and Mr. Randy Brame; two
daughters-in-law, Mrs. Doris Claiborne and Mrs. Brenda Claiborne; a
devoted neighbor, Mr. Clarence Bailey, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday, October 28 at Five Fork Baptist
Church with Rev. Moses Dixon officiating. Burial followed in the
church cemetery.
Mr. James Henry "Bud" McCormick
Mr. James Henry "Bud" McCormick, 64 of 165 Wildwood Terrace, Danville
died Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at Danville Regional Hospital. He was
born in Halifax County on May 4, 1943, a son of the late Alonzo Lennie
McCormick and Florida Owen McCormick. He was a member of Hillcrest
Baptist Church and a former member of Bethel Ruritan Club.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Hamblen McCormick of Danville; two
daughters, Sheryle M. Leksell and husband Gary of Halifax, Terrie M.
Wilkerson of Atlanta, GA; one son, Brian Conner and wife Karen of
Danville; three brothers, Lawrence McCormick of Halifax, Bill McCormick
of Forrest and David McCormick of South Boston; five sisters, Frances
Womack and Annie M. Womack, both of Vernon Hill, Lourine Throckmorton
of Scottsburg, Peggy Murray of Buffalo Junction, Patsy Holcombe of
Nathalie; six grandchildren, Brittany and Hunter Wilkerson, Shane and
Gabrielle Leksell and Kolby and Brianne Conner; a special niece, Cindy
McCormick of Halifax, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in
death by a brother, Charlie McCormick.
Funeral services were held Friday, October 26 at Powell Funeral Home
with Rev. Bob Yeaman, Rev. Ross Range, Sr. and Rev. Penny Wilson
officiating. Burial followed in the McCormick-Owen Family Cemetery,
Clays Mill. Memorials may be directed to the Stroke Association or the
Halifax County Cancer Association, P.O. Box 875, South Boston, VA
24592.
Ms. Rosa Geraldine Canada
Ms. Rosa Geraldine Canada of Halifax died Wednesday, October 24, 2007
at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 75. Born in Halifax County
on June 21, 1932 to the late Mr. Charles Edward Canada and Mrs. Carrie
Jennings Canada, she was a member of First Baptist Church of Meadville.
Mrs. Canada is survived by five sons, Mr. Thomas Canada of New York, Mr
Harry Canada, Mr. James Canada, Mr. Samuel Canada and Mr. David Canada,
all of Halifax, three sisters, Mrs. Mary Coleman of South Boston, Mrs.
Dorothy Canada of New York and Mrs. Georgie Jennings of Halifax, 13
grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Also surviving are four
brothers, Mr. Freddy Canada of South Boston, Mr. James Canada, Mr.
Willie Canada and Mr. Hunter Canada, all of Halifax, two aunts, Mrs.
Dorothy Strokes and Mrs. Rosa Anderson, both of New York and a host of
nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death
by a daughter, Ms. Barbara Ann Canada and four sons, Mr. Walter,
Robert, William and Calvin Canada.
A funeral service for Ms. Canada will be conducted on Monday, October
29 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Meadville with Rev. Robert
Wimbush officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The
family is receiving friends at the home, 6216 L. P. Bailey Highway,
Halifax.
