Mr. Luther Herbert Matthews, Sr
Mr. Luther Herbert Matthews, Sr., 84, of 2195 East Hyco Road, South
Boston died Monday, October 15, 2007 at his home. He was born in
Halifax County on May 8, 1923, a son of the late Joseph Matthews and
Rosa Wilkins Matthews and was married to Maryland Puryear Matthews. He
was a member of Cherry Hill United Methodist Church, Hyco Road Ruritan
Club, was a veteran of the U.S. Army 11th Airborne serving in World War
II where he received the Purple Heart and was an animal control officer
with Halifax County. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Luther Herbert "Luke" Matthews, Jr. and wife Kathy of South Boston; one daughter,
Marcia Matthews Thomas and husband Jimmy of Eden, NC; one sister,
Bessie Coates of Rustburg; two grandchildren, Teresa Link Boschen and
husband Tim and Ayme Link Currin and husband Sean; step-grandchildren,
Niki Thomas, Jonathan Thomas; great-grandchildren, Reed Boschen, Morgan
Boschen, Zane Currin. Graveside services were held Wednesday at Cherry Hill U.M.C. Cemetery with Rev. Randy Holmes and Rev. Jason Bryant officiating. Memorials may be directed to Halifax Regional Hospice, 2204 Wilborn Avenue, South Boston, VA 24592 or Cherry Hill United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
Mr. Lawrence (LL) Henry Land
Mr. Lawrence (LL) Henry Land, Jr., 21, of 2041 Philpott Road, South
Boston died Saturday, October 13, 2007 at his home. He was born in
Person County, NC on April 2, 1986, a son of Lawrence H. Land, Sr. and
Mary Elizabeth Ferguson Land. He attended Freedom Worship Center.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Candice Ann
Land and Samantha Nicole Ferguson, both of Roxboro, NC; his maternal
grandparents, William and Betty Arendall of South Boston; his aunt,
Tamatha Arendall of South Boston. He was preceded in death by a
brother, William Thomas James Land.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 17 at Freedom Worship
Center with Rev. Ricky Whitlow officiating. Burial followed in Liberty
United Church of Christ Cemetery.
Mr. Frank Lee Seamster
Mr. Frank Lee Seamster, 68, of 1010 Woodsdale Road, Alton died Monday,
October 15, 2007 at MCV-Richmond. He was born in Halifax County on
August 8, 1939, a son of the late Elvin Curtis Seamster, Sr. and Nannie
Conner Seamster and was married to Barbara Ann Matthews Seamster. He
was a retired employee of Burress Lumber Company.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Frank Junior
Seamster of Alton; step-sons, Clarence Wade "Pee Wee" Seamster of
Alton; brother, Elijah "Butch" Seamster of Nathalie; sisters, Mildred
Moore and husband Fred of Appomattox, Virginia Leadbetter and Joanne
and Cecil Throckmorton, all of Halifax; four nephews, two
step-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild. He was preceded in
death by two brothers, Elvin Curtis Seamster, Jr. and Henry Jake
Seamster.Graveside services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at the Dawson Family Cemetery.
Donna Maree Orbell Kuser
Donna Maree Orbell Kuser, 46, of 1317 Jeffress Street, South Boston
died Monday, October 15, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was
born in TePuke, New Zealand on November 9, 1960, a daughter of Brian
James Orbell and Judith Margaret Hart.
She is survived by a son, Lucas James Kuser of South Hill; a daughter,
Sophie Grace Crowell of South Boston; her parents, Brian James Orbell
and wife Eileen Anne of Washington, DC and Judith Margaret Hart of
Cornwall, UK; one sister, Kimberly Stephanie Beaumont of Winchester,
UK; two brothers, Michael James Orbell and Dean Nicholas Orbell, both
of Washington, DC; and a close friend, Andy Crowell of South Boston.
Private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Wanda Gail Watson Jones
Wanda Gail Watson Jones, 55, of 1187 Brooklyn Road, Sutherlin died
Monday, October 15, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in
Halifax County on February 28, 1952, a daughter of Elmer H. Watson and
Patricia Boswell Watson and was married to Johnny Jones. She was a
member of Southside Baptist Church and a cafeteria manager in the
Halifax County School System.
In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by two
daughters, Jillian Elizabeth Jones and Candice Lynn Slayton, both of
Sutherlin; a sister, Donna Adams and husband Tommy of Sutherlin;
brothers-in-law, Daniel Jones and friend Penny Smith of Oak Level and
Cecil Jones and wife Tammy of Halifax; sister-in-law, Arlene Stephens
and friend Jimmy Whitaker of Chase City; a niece and nephew, Jacqueline
and Jeremey Falls of Sutherlin, other relatives and friends.
Graveside services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at Arbor Baptist
Church Cemetery with Rev. Don Bryant officiating. Memorials may be
directed to the Southwest Indian Foundation, P.O. Box 86, Gallup, NM
87302 or St. Labre Indian School Educational Association, Ashland, MT
