Mary Godbold Glascock
Retired teacher Mary Godbold Glascock died quietly in her home
September 26, 2007.  She was 85.  Born in Marion, South Carolina on
November 5, 1921, she called South Boston home for more than 83 years.
Mrs. Glascock taught earth science and biology to thousands of Halifax
County children during the course of her 32 year teaching career.  She
enjoyed her time in the classroom, the daily interaction with students
and other teachers and the hustle and bustle of life at Halifax County
High School and Halifax County Junior High School.
During her retirement she particularly enjoyed chance encounters with
former students, many of whom will soon be retiring after careers in
science, agriculture, engineering, medicine, pharmacy, nursing and
dentistry.
Most of her former students remember her passion for science, her
interest in them, her signature "doughnut" hair style and a voice that
was the product of years in the classroom and a long and happy marriage
to a man who was hard of hearing.
Mrs. Glascock graduated from C.H. Friend School.  She was an honor
student and a head turning beauty who had little trouble attracting the
attention of T.J. Glascock who was voted the most popular, the most
attractive and the wittiest boy in the senior class.
"T.J. is a powerful lucky boy to get such a good looking girl," wrote a
male classmate who described himself in her 1939 high school year book
as "a person who admires you very much."
Mr. Glascock also made clear how he felt in the same yearbook.
"I'm too bashful to write what I would like to," he wrote, "so I'll put
it mild and say I love you."
Their courtship lasted five years.  During that time, Mrs. Glascock
graduated from The Woman's College of the University of North Carolina
in Greensboro, the nation was drawn into World War II and Mr. Glascock
joined the United States Army.
Mrs. Glascock was determined to marry T.J. before his unit deployed to
England, she and her mother rode the train to Jackson, Mississippi for
the ceremony.
After the war, Mr. and Mrs. Glascock returned to South Boston where Mr.
Glascock went to work in the family hardware store.  Two sons were
followed by two daughters and in 1959 the family moved into a new home
on Wilkerson Street.
A teenager during the Great Depression, Mrs. Glascock was an
optimistic, practical woman with a winning smile and robust sense of
humor who knew how to stretch a dollar.  She was an extraordinary
seamstress.  Her daughters attended school, church and the prom in
stylish dresses and formal gowns produced on the Singer sewing machine
in a basement bedroom.  Later in life, she made quilts and dolls for
her children and grandchildren.
She and Mr. Glascock believed in the value of education and took pride
in the fact that all of their children are college graduates.
Mrs. Glascock enjoyed golf, gardening, her pet dachshunds, the
fellowship of exercise class at the South Boston YMCA, the company of
family and long time friends, a good joke and an occasional glass of
Scotch whiskey.
Mrs. Glascock was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Judson
Glascock of South Boston.  She is survived by her brother and his
spouse, Frank and Tee Godbold of South Boston and by all four of her
children and their spouses:  Tom and Suk Glascock of Richmond, VA,
Scott and Tonta Glascock of Glade Spring, VA, Susan and Ronnie Chappell
of Houston, TX and Ellen and Bob Gutierrez of Boulder, CO.
She is survived by four grandchildren, Grayson Glascock of Charlotte,
NC, Adam Glascock of Glade Spring, VA, Seth Chappell of Fayetteville,
NC and Meghan Chappell of Denver, CO.
Mrs. Glascock was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church in
South Boston where a service in her memory was held Saturday, September
29 at 11 a.m.  The Rev. Dr. Russell Lee officiated.  Mrs. Glascock was
buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery in South Boston beside her husband.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, friends consider making a
memorial gift to the Halifax Regional Hospice, 2204 Wilborn Avenue,
South Boston, VA 24592, to the Memorial Fund at First Presbyterian
Church, 800 North Main Street, South Boston, VA 24592, to the Patrick
Henry Boys and Girls Home, P.O. Box 1398, Brookneal, VA 24535 or to a
