Obituaries
Rev. Dora Dixon Coleman
Rev. Dora Dixon Coleman, 88, of Burtis Avenue, South Boston died
Saturday, September 8, 2007 at Berry Hill Nursing Home. She was born
in Halifax County on March 6, 1919, a daughter of the late Mr.
Alexander Dixon and Mrs. Minnie Coleman Dixon and was married to Mr.
George Coleman and was a member of Christ in You Worship Center.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Rev. William
Dixon of South Boston; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one
daughter-in-law, Mrs. Thelma Dixon, other relatives and friends. She
was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Ms. Deborah Dixon, three
brothers Mr. Lawyer Dixon, Mr. Otha Dixon and Mr. Ike Dixon and
sisters, Mrs. Mable Richardson, Ms. Miller Dixon and Ms. Hattie Dixon.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 11 at Christ in You
Worship Center with Bishop Joseph A. Dixon officiating. Burial
followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Daniel Davis Cole
Mr. Daniel Davis Cole, Sr., 82, of Highway 49, Nelson died Sunday,
September 9, 2007 at his home. He was born in Halifax County on
February 15, 1925, a son of the late Robert Daniel Cole and Mary Seat
Cole Elder and was married to Annie Hite Cole. He was a member of
Shady Grove United Methodist Church, a retired employee of Burlington
Industries, Inc., Clarksville and an Army World War II veteran.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mickey Laws
and husband Mike of Hurdle Mills, NC and Teresa Bowes of Roxboro, NC;
one son, Danny Cole, Jr. and wife Diana of Virgilina; step-daughters,
Connie Blankenship of Oxford, NC and Shirley Julian of Henderson, NC;
brothers, Ralph F. Cole and Otis W. Cole, both of Virgilina; sisters,
Clara C. Elliott and Sylvia Lowery, both of South Boston and Eula
Fuller of Buffalo Junction; grandchildren, Robin Oakley, Wendy C.
Spivey, Megan Cole, Ashley Laws Fletcher, Jennifer C. Bowen, Autumn
Bowes, Carsen Bowes, step-grandchildren Randy Blankenship, Autumn
Julian, great-grandchildren, Lauren Oakley, Cole Bowen, Tyler Spivey,
Daniel Spivey. He was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Cole, a
daughter Linda Cole, step-son Stanley R. Julian and sister Eunice
Lowery. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Brooks Funeral Home with
Rev. Raymond McGarr officiating. Burial followed in Shady Grove
U.M.C.

Margaret Viola Tallent Brown,
Margaret Viola Tallent Brown, 86, of 1058 Waterin Hole Road, Alton died
Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born
in Warsaw, VA on December 15, 1920, a daughter of the late Walter
Tallent and Josie France Tallent and was married to the late Walter Lee
Brown, Sr. She was of the Baptist faith, a member of VFW Post 8243
Ladies Auxiliary and an avid Bingo player.
She is survived by daughters, Margaret Ann "Doodle" Ballenger and
husband Ron of Taveres, FL and Victoria Brown Swift and husband Jack of
Clearwater, FL; sons, Walter "Lee" Brown, Jr. of South Boston and H.R.
"Pete" Brown of Cluster Springs; two sisters, Olivia McPherson of
Indian Head, MD and Ethelene "Punch" King of Mechanicsville, MD;
granddaughters, Shelby Ballenger, Lindsay Brown and Samantha Swift,
grandsons Matthew Ballenger and Walter "Jake" Brown; and
great-grandchild Matty Ballenger.
Graveside services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at Black Walnut
Baptist Church Cemetery with Donald Roarabaugh officiating. Memorials
may be directed to the Cluster Springs Volunteer Fire Department, P.O.

Mr. Douglas Bryant Inge
Mr. Douglas Bryant Inge, 72, of 1213 Nathalie Road, Nathalie died
Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at The Woodview. He was born in Halifax
County on April 5, 1935, a son of the late Ernest Martin Inge and Inez
Moore Inge and was married to Phyllis Wilkins Inge. He was a member of
Catawba Baptist Church, French Masonic Lodge #270 and Volens American
Legion Post 342. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three
daughters, Jonette Inge Talbott and husband Maurice of Nathalie,
Susan Inge Thomasson of Halifax, Elizabeth Annette Inge of Nathalie;
one daughter-in-law, Janet
Lester Inge of South Boston; two grandsons, Jason Sanford Talbott and
wife Katrina of Alton and Bryant James Inge of South Boston; one
granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Inge of South Boston; two
great-grandsons, Ethan John Talbott and Lucas Dale Talbott, both of
Alton; one sister, Elsie Inge Lowery of South Boston. He was preceded
in death by one son, Douglas Mitchell Inge and one sister, Edith Inge
Overcash. Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Powell
Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Brian Simmons officiating. Burial
will follow in
Catawba Baptist Church Cemetery with Masonic Rites. Memorials may be

Mr. Cecil Hastings Coleman
Mr. Cecil Hastings Coleman, 76, of Grubby Road, Halifax died Sunday,
September 9, 2007 at his home. He was born in Halifax County on
October 30, 1930, a son of the late Mr. Percy Coleman and Mrs.
Hazelanna Winston Coleman. He was a member of St. Matthew Baptist
Church. He is survived by a brother-in-law, Mr. Kenneth Thom of Clover;
two
sisters-in-law; a devoted niece, Ms. Tushan Hunt; two devoted cousins,
Karen Coleman and Ms. Flossie Bannerman; and other relatives and
friends. Memorial services will be held Friday, September 14 at 1:30 p.m.
at
Jeffress Funeral Home with Rev. Alfred Chandler officiating. The
family will receive friends at the service on Friday.
Margaret Perkins Smith
Margaret Perkins Smith of South Boston died Tuesday, September 11, 2007
at the age of 95. She was the daughter of David A. Perkins and Emma P.
Perkins Snead and step daughter of Charles W. Snead. She was married to
Thomas Clifton Smith who predeceased her in 1973. She was preceded in
death by three brothers, Henry, Percy and Frank Perkins and a
son-in-law, Jeffrey T. Puryear. She is survived by a daughter, two sons
and their wives; Nancy S. Puryear of Virgilina, David and Norma
Smith of Midlothian; Thomas and Mari Kay Smith of Greensboro, NC,
seven grandchildren: Jeffrey Puryear, Jr. Sarah P. Vaughan and her
husband, Richard, Rob Smith and wife, Valeska, Amy Smith, Kim Smith,
Clif Smith and his wife, Virginia and Pam Curlee and her husband,
Michael and six great grandchildren: Brooke Vaughan, Clint Vaughan,
Parker Smith, Justin Smith, Lindsay Smith and Piper Smith. Mrs.
Smith is a retired South Boston and Halifax County elementary school
teacher. Her church and organization affiliations included being a
member of First Baptist Church, deaconess, Sunday School teacher,
Elizabeth Hale Circle member, Eastern Star and the Retired Teachers
Association. A funeral service for Mrs. Smith will be conducted on Friday,
September 14 at 2 p.m. at Aarons Creek Baptist Church where the
family will receive friends for an hour prior to the service. The
family will also receive friends at other times at the home of her
daughter, Nancy
Smith, 6031 North Fork Road, Virgilina. Internment will follow in the
Aarons Creek Baptist Church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials
contributions may be made to the Aarons Creek Baptist Church Building
Fund, attn: Harriett Hudson, 1066 Aarons Creek Road, Virgilina, VA
24598.
Mrs. Olivia Crawley Lawson
Mrs. Olivia Crawley Lawson of Horseshoe Trail, Cluster Springs died
Monday, September 10, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of
71. Born in Halifax County on January 18, 1936, she was the daughter of
the late Mr. Joseph Crawley and Mrs. Estelle Scott Crawley. She was
married to the late Mr. Will Thomas Lawson and was a member of Owens
Grove Baptist Church. Mrs. Lawson is survived by four daughters, Ms. JoAnn
Crawley of the home, Mrs. Marion Guy of South Boston, Ms. Karen
Crawley and Ms. Tammy Crawley, both of Virgilina, three sons, Mr.
James Lawson, Mr. Michael Crawley and Mr. Walter Lawson, all of
Cluster Springs, 13
grandchildren, one great grandchild, a sister, Mrs. Mary Lee Wheat of
Hopewell, a son-in-law, Mr. Dallas Guy and a host of nieces, nephews,
cousins, other relatives and friends including the devoted Terry F.
Walton. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son,
Lawrence T. Crawley and a daughter, Nancy Crawley.
A funeral service for Mrs. Lawson will be held Saturday, September 15
at 11 a.m. at the Zion Hill Baptist Church with Rev. John Leigh
officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will
receive friends at the home, 1811 Horseshoe Trail, Cluster Springs.
Mrs. Mary Eliza Smith Daniel
Mrs. Mary Eliza Smith Daniel of Boston Commons, 1146 North Main Street,
South Boston died Wednesday morning at Lynchburg General Hospital. She
was 92 years of age at the time of her death. Born December 13, 1914,
in Halifax County she was the daughter of the late Byrd Walker Smith
and Irene Snead Smith. She worked for Singer Sewing Machine Company as
a sewing instructor for many years. She was a member of Ash Avenue
Baptist Church in South Boston where she was involved in the WMU, choir
and also did flowers for the church.
She was married to the late Gaddis Terrell Daniel and is survived by
one daughter, Jean Daniel Harville and her husband, Coy Harville of
Danville and one son, Charles Walker Daniel and his wife, Peggy Daniel
of South Boston. One grandson, Kenneth Lee Scearce of Elizabeth City,
North Carolina, two granddaughters, Sandy Scearce Lutton of McLean and
Stephanie Lea Daniel of Charlotte, NC, a step-granddaughter, Tina
Harville of Cary, NC. and two great grandchildren, Ashly and Lane
Scearce of Elizabeth City, NC also survive. Other survivors include
three brothers, Walker Smith and George (Lindy) Smith of Richmond and
Harry Byrd Smith of Lynchburg. and one sister, Rachel Smith Locke of
Drakes Branch. A celebration of Mary Eliza's life will be held at Ash
Avenue Baptist Church on Friday, September 14 at 11 a.m. with the
Rev. John Eure and the Rev. Larry Woolbrink officiating. Burial will
follow in Halifax
Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral
Home Thursday from 7 until 8:30 p.m and at other times at the home of
her son, Charles Daniel, 714 Maple Avenue, South Boston.
