Mrs. Evelyn Carlton Smith
Mrs. Evelyn Carlton Smith, 97, of 4000 N. Terry's Bridge Road, Halifax
died Monday, September 3, 2007 at The Woodview. She was born August 6,
1910, a daughter of the late Oscar Wood Carlton and Pearl Lillian Crute
Carlton and was married to the late John William Smith. She was a
member of Bethel Baptist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Doris S. Tuck of Roxboro, NC and
Nancy S. Haskins and husband Charles of Halifax; five sons, Oscar J.
Smith and wife Bettie of Halifax, Raymond W. Smith and wife Louise of
Roxboro, NC, Howard T. Smith and wife Mary Agnes of Roxboro, NC,
Richard Smith and wife Rebecca of South Boston, Charlie R. Smith and
wife Mary of Halifax; two sisters, Ella C. Jones and Bessie C. Moody,
both of Roxboro, NC; four brothers, Bennie L. Carlton of South Boston,
Ralph Carlton of Altavista, Wayne Carlton of Richmond and Charlie
Carlton of Bluefield, WV; 21 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and
three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one
sister, Josephine Dawson and two brothers, Curtis Carlton and Bill
Carlton.
A funeral service was held Wednesday, September 5 at Bethel Baptist
Church with Rev. Bob Rudman conducting the service. Burial followed in
the church cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Bethel Baptist
Church, Hwy. 360, Scottsburg, VA 24589.
Mrs. Janis Martin Whitt
Mrs. Janis Martin Whitt, 67, of 2217 Mountain View Road, Danville died
Monday, September 3, 2007 at Duke University Hospital, Durham, NC. She
was born March 27, 1940, a daughter of Jewel Cox Martin and the late
Lucas "Dutch" Martin and was married to Bradley Wayne Whitt. She
retired from music at the age of 21, having toured with Porter Wagoner,
Jim Reaves and other RCA artists. She was billed as the female Elvis,
known as the Queen of Rockabilly, a member of Jehovah's Witness Kingdom
Hall in South Boston and employed by Danville Golf Club as manager.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a sister, Geraldine M.
Conner of South Boston; a granddaughter, Lindsay Parton Fisher,
daughter-in-law, Debbie Hazelwood Parton of South Boston; a
great-granddaughter, Kaylee Jewel Fisher; two step-sons, Bradley Wayne
Whitt, Jr. of Alton, John Todd Whitt of Birmingham, AL; a
step-daughter, Denise Torricella of Miami, FL. She was preceded in
death by a son, Kevin Gaylord Parton and a brother, Charlie Gaylord
Martin.
A funeral service will be held Friday, September 7 at 11:00 a.m. at
Norris Funeral Home, Danville with Elder Garland Walker and Elder
Douglas Stacey officiating. Interment will be held in Highland Burial
Park, Danville. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:00-8:00
p.m. at Norris Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Danville
Cancer Association, 2323 Riverside Drive, Danville, VA 24541.
Mr. Daniel Ryan Bowes
Mr. Daniel Ryan Bowes, 18, of 5114 Cluster Springs Road, Alton died
Saturday, September 1, 2007 at UNC-Chapel Hill Hospital. He was born
in Halifax County on January 16, 1989, a son of Donald Mitchell Bowes
of Alton and Betty Davis Poole of Roxboro, NC. He formerly attended
Aarons Creek Baptist Church, was a student at Danville Community
College and was a member of Alton Hunting Club. He was employed with
Mason C. Day, Jr. as a farm hand.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Tabitha
Meagan Bowes of Alton and Carisa Faith Elliott of South Boston; a
brother, Nicholas Kyle "Nicky" Bowes of Alton; nephews, Alexander and
Jaxson Elliott; his maternal grandmother, Margaret Young Glasscock of
Alton and paternal grandmother, Faye C. Solomon of Alton. He was
preceded in death by is maternal grandfather, Glenn D. Davis, paternal
grandfather Raymond Bank Bowes, maternal great-grandmother, Mattie Cole
Young and paternal great-grandmother, Rebecca Lowery Cliborne.
A funeral service was held Wednesday, September 5 at Aarons Creek
Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Stewart conducting the service. Burial
followed in the church cemetery.
