Obituaries
Harry Edward DeJarnette III
Harry Edward DeJarnette III, 55, of Albany, GA., formerly of Nathalie,
passed away Friday, August 31, 2007 at his home. He was the husband of
Dianne B. DeJarnette.Mr. DeJarnette was born in Lynchburg, November 19,
1951, a son of the late Harry Edward DeJarnette, Jr and Evelyn Rogers
DeJarnette. He was a member of Clover Bottom Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters; Tracey Krempl
and Sarah DeJarnette; one sister, Vickie D. Barker and husband Robert
A. Barker, Jr.A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am Tuesday,
September 4, 2007 at Clover Bottom Baptist Church with the Rev. Donald G.
Proctor officiating.The family will receive friends at 5010 Stage Coach
Road, Nathalie. Informal visitation will be at Henderson Funeral Home and
Cremation
Service, Brookneal at other times.

Daniel Ryan Bowes
Daniel Ryan Bowes, 18 of 5114 Cluster Springs Road ,died in
Chapel Hill Hospital from the results of a auto accident. He was the son
of Donald Mitchell Bowes of Alton and Betty Davis Poole of Roxboro,
N.C., was a 2007 graduate of Halifax County High School and had just begun
classes at Danville Community College. He also worked for Mason C. Day,
Jr. as a farm hand. He formerly attended Aarons Creek Baptist Church and
was a member of the Alton Hunting Club. In addition to his parents, he is
survived by two sisters, Tabitha Meagan Bowes of Alton and Carisa Faith
Elliott of South Boston and a brother, Nicholas Kyle "Nicky" Bowes of
Alton and nephews, Alexander and Jason Elliott of South Boston, his
maternal grandmother, Margaret Young Glasscock of Alton and his paternal
grandmother, Faye C. Solomon. He was preceded in death by his maternal
grandfather, Glenn D. Davis and his paternal grandfather, Raymond Bank
Bowes and his maternal great grandmother, Mattie Cole Young and his
paternal great grandmother Rebecca Lowery Cliborne.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete at press time and will be announced

Mr. James Daniel Nelson, Sr
Mr. James Daniel Nelson, Sr. of 103 Rosehill Drive, South Boston died
Friday, August 31, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born April 5,
1916, he was 91 at the time of his death. He was a self employed farmer
and a member of North Fork Baptist Church.
Mr. Nelson is survived by four daughters, Rebecca N. Elliott of
Goochland, Brenda N. Lowery of Chester, Ella N. Evans and Marilyn N.
Wilson, both of South Boston, a son, James Daniel Nelson, Jr. of
Danville, ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Also
surviving are five sisters, Mary Sue Weary of Buffalo Junction, Isla
Bagbey of Nelson, Virgie McCann of Roxboro, NC and Nannie Taylor and
Lucy Nelson both of Richmond, and three brothers, Robert Nelson of
Virgilina, Roosevelt Nelson of Nelson and Irby Nelson of South Hill. He
was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Pool Nelson, his parents, John
Irby Nelson and Mary Ella Morris Nelson, a sister, Lucille Allgood and
a grandchild, Pamela Ann Elliott.
A funeral service for Mr. Nelson was conducted on Sunday, September 2
at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Eure
officiating. Burial followed in Floral Hill Memory Gardens in Danville.

Mrs. Klara Osborne Coulson
Mrs. Klara Osborne Coulson of Richmond, formerly of South Boston died
August 27, 2007 in Richmond. Born in South Boston on September 16,
1936, she was 70 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Shellie
Banks Osborne and Anna Steube Osborne and was married to Joe Clifford
Coulson.Mrs. Coulson is survived by her husband of the home a daughter,
Danielle Parr McLaughlin and husband John of Montpelier, three sons,
Randal Craig Matze and wife Anne of Richmond, Robert Shane Parr and
wife, Suzanne of Montpelier and Darin Stuart Parr and wife, Claudia of
Sandston, six grandchildren, Anne Hollinworth Matze of Richmond, Robert
Evan Parr and Madalyn Brinn Parr of Montpelier, Shelley Anne Parr of
Richmond, Hugh Logan McLaughlin and Elizabeth Anne McLaughlin, both of
Montpelier and four sisters, Elizabeth Osborne Johns, Shirley Osborne
Epps and Hazel Osborne, Compton, all of Halifax and Elsie Osborne
Shelton of Wallace, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents and
brothers, Ashby Edward "Ace" Osborne and George Sydnor Osborne.
A memorial service will be held at Powell Funeral Home on Thursday,
September 6 at 12 noon with the Rev. Doug Gibson officiating. A
visitation and time of remembrance will follow the service until 2 p.m.

Mrs. Catherine Morton Ferguson
Mrs. Catherine Morton Ferguson, 99, of South Boston died Sunday, August
26, 2007 at The Woodview Nursing Home. She was born in Halifax County
on September 16, 1907 to the late Mr. Tom Morton and Mrs. Annie Boxley
Morton and was married to the late Mr. Artie Ferguson, Sr. She was a
member of First Baptist Church, Ferry Street.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Annie F. Chism of South Boston
and Mrs. Willie Mae Hamlett of Pleasantville, NJ; three sons, Mr. Artie
Ferguson, Jr. of Paso Robles, CA, Mr. Robert Ferguson of South Boston
and Mr. Thomas Ferguson of Atlantic City, NJ; one son-in-law, Mr.
Crawford Hamlett, Sr.; 23 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren, 56
great-great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday, September 2 at First Baptist Church
with Rev. Haywood Jennings, Sr. officiating. Burial followed in Oak
Ridge Cemetery.
Mrs. Matsu Lowery Ford
Mrs. Matsu Lowery Ford, 88, of 3203 Cherry Hill Church Road, South
Boston died Thursday, August 30, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was born in Halifax County on March 1, 1919, a daughter of the late
Hunter C. Lowery and Martha Griffin Lowery and was married to the late
George Stover Ford. She was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist
Church and a homemaker.
She is survived by two sons, Hunter C. Ford and wife Cecile and Kenneth
S. Ford and wife Janet, all of South Boston; one daughter, Martha F.
Conner and husband Mickey of Virgilina; one sister, Elise L. Meadows of
South Boston; grandchildren, Amanda Vernon, Chris Conner, Casey Waller,
Donna Anderson, Kimberly Perkins and five great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by a sister, Rosetta Veasey.
Funeral services were held Sunday, September 2 at Shady Grove United
Methodist Church with Rev. Ray McGarr officiating. Burial followed in
the church cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Shady Grove UMC
General Fund, 4129 E. Hyco Road, South Boston, VA 24592 or the Halifax

Mr. John Henry Williams
Mr. John Henry Williams, Sr., 86, 1180 Williams Trail, Halifax died
Thursday, August 30, 2007 at his home. He was born in Halifax County
on December 20, 1920 to the late Mr. Pleasant Williams and Mrs. Rosa
Owens Williams and was a member of Union Grove CME Church and was
married to Mrs. Ida Mae Mills Williams.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Rosa
Carrington of Edgewood, MD and Mrs. Delma Marable of Halifax; three
sons, Mr. Robert Earl Williams, Mr. James Thomas Williams and Mr. John
Henry Williams, Jr., all of Halifax; three sisters, Mrs. Rosa Lee Muse
of New York, Mrs. Mary Emma Mills and Mrs. Catherine Davis, both of
South Boston; 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; one son-in-law,
three daughters-in-law, four sisters-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Howerton,
Mrs. Gladys Edmonds, Mrs. Thalia Ragsdale and Mrs. Clarise Hubbard,
other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by three
brothers, Mr. James Williams, Mr. Louis Williams and Mr. Charlie
Williams and three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Dixon, Mrs. Charity Logan
and Mrs. Luthenia Muse.
Funeral services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at Union Grove CME
Church with Rev. Larry Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the
church cemetery.
Mr. Woodrow Wilson Williams
Mr. Woodrow Wilson Williams, 94, of 1414 Peach Avenue, South Boston
died Friday, August 31, 2007 at his home. He was born in Halifax
County on July 6, 1913, son of the late Nathaniel Paul Williams and the
late Minnie Sue Loftis Williams and was married to June Harriett
Wilmoth Williams. He was a member of First Baptist Church, the Woodmen
of the World #106, Union Ruritan Club, former member of the South
Boston Lions Club, the Halifax Soil & Water Conservation and a member
of the South Boston/Halifax County Historical Museum. In addition to
his wife, he is survived by one stepson, Cecil Thomas Lipscomb of
Halifax; three sisters, Erleen W. Savin of Orlando, FL, Marie Williams
of Orlando, FL, Catherine W. Morgan of New Smyrna Beach, FL and two
step-grandchildren, Matthew and Hannah Lipscomb. Funeral services will
be held today at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Tim
Cannon conducting the service. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge
Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the South Boston/Halifax County
