Obituaries
Mr. John Robert Mitchell
Mr. John Robert Mitchell of Hopewell, formerly of Halifax
County, died
Saturday, July 28, 2007. He is survived by his wife, Iris Mitchell and
two daughters, Lisa Goldmann and her husband Dr. Peter Goldmann and
Kimberly Mitchell-Newnam and her husband, George Newnam, two
grandchildren, Matthew Newnam and Rachel Newnam; five sisters, Margaret
Epps of Vernon Hill, Christine Fallen of Nathalie, Mary Harris of
Nathalie, Carolyn Midkiff of Halifax, Janice Mitchell of Vernon Hill
and Diana Conner of Nathalie; and one brother, Leonard Mitchell of
Nathalie.
John was retired from the U.S. Air Force and the Federal Civil Service.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home Monday from 7 to
8 p.m. A graveside service will be conducted at Providence Presbyterian
Church on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jeff Jones officiating.
Mr. William (Skinner) Samuel Beard
Mr. William (Skinner) Samuel Beard, 64, of 711 Edmunds
Street, South
Boston died Thursday, July 26, 2007 at his home. He was born in
Halifax County on December 6, 1942, a son of the late Mr. Athan Hunt
and Mrs. Lizzie Beard and was a member of First Baptist Church and long
time employee of Lantor's Ladies Apparel.
He is survived by one brother, Mr. Claud J. Beard of Halifax; two
sisters, Ms. Marquerita Riddick and Ms. Lucinda Riddick, both of
Norfolk; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Oveda Beard; a devoted aunt, Mrs.
Edith Woodson; three nieces and three nephews, other relatives and
friends. He was preceded in death by one brother, Mr. Robert Lee
Beard.
Funeral services were held Sunday, July 29 at First Baptist Church,
Ferry Street with Rev. Wallace Pierce officiating. Burial followed in
Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Mr. Charlie Keister Dixon
Mr. Charlie Keister Dixon, 78, of Philadelphia, PA,
formerly of Halifax
County, died Monday, July 23, 2007. He was born in Halifax County on
March 10, 1929, a son of the late Mr. Otis Dixon and Mrs. Gracie Dixon.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Charlene K. Dixon-Hailey and Ms.
Diane K. Dixon, both of Philadelphia, PA; one son, Mr. Daryl K. Dixon
of Philadelphia, PA; two sisters, Mrs. Maryellen Coleman of Halifax and
Mrs. Annie-Grace Forster of Jersey City, NY; one brother, Mr. Linwood
Dixon of Halifax; one aunt, Mrs. Louis Lovelace and one uncle, Mr.
Ernest Lovelace, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist
Church, Meadville with Rev. Robert S. Wimbish officiating. Burial will
follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Charlie Keister Dixon
Mr. Charlie Keister Dixon, 88, of 1193 Coleman Road,
Scottsburg died
Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at The Woodview. She was born in Halifax
County on October 11, 1918, a daughter of the late Charles Henry
Powell and Annie Smith Powell and was married to the late Roy Swanson
Hatcher, Sr. She was a member of Scottsburg Baptist Church where she
was a former Sunday school teacher.
She is survived by one daughter, Barbara H. Shaver and husband Jerry of
Danville; two sons, Roy S. Hatcher, Jr. of Scottsburg and Cecil Wayne
Hatcher and wife Linda of Scottsburg; two sisters, Louise P. Hawkins
and husband Benny of Lynchburg, Jeanette P. Newton of Scottsburg; one
brother, Edward Powell of Danville; five grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandchild,
Sandy Hatcher Wilkerson.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 28 at Scottsburg Baptist
Church with Rev. Terry Scearce officiating. Burial followed in Oakland
Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Scottsburg Baptist Church.
Mr. James David Clarke
Mr. James David Clarke, 71, of Clover died Wednesday, July
25, 2007 at
his home. He was born in Halifax County on June 18, 1936, a son of the
late Oliver and Mary Ellen Jones Clark and was married to the late
Gloria Sonie Burgess Clarke. He was a member of Bethel Grove Baptist
Church and was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
He is survived by five sisters, Louise Clark of Baltimore, MD, Ruth
Clarke of Jamaica, NY, Loretta Garrett of South Boston, his twin sister
Dorothy McDaniel of St. Albans, NY and Pattie Brown of Clover; two
brothers, Oscar Clark of St. Albans, NY and Deacon Sidney Clark of
Clover; two brothers-in-law, Louis McDaniel and Lilton Garrett; two
sisters-in-law, Edna Clark and Mamie Clark; other relatives and
friends.
Funeral services will be held today at 12:00 noon at Bethel Grove
Baptist Church with Rev. William Hicks conducting the service. Burial
will follow in the church cemetery.
CARD OF THANKS
Van Ferguson and family would like to thank all who worked so hard on
his benefit June 30. To those who organized the benefit, those who
worked and served food and the musicians who performed and to all who
came and donated or contributed. Your kindness will never be
forgotten.
