Obituaries
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Newman Clifton
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Newman Clifton, age 89, born on March 13, 1918, in
Newcastle, Kentucky, to Cora Virgie Baker and James Everett Newman,
died on July 25, 2007. Her husband, long-time Baptist minister in
Virginia, Norman Cecil Clifton, preceded her in death in 1971.
She is survived by her children, Dr. Patricia Elizabeth Clifton
Harwood, and her husband, Dr. Richard Kistler Harwood, of Richmond,
Virginia and Mary Cecile Clifton Mitchell, and her husband, Dr. Francis
Barnes Mitchell, of Halifax, Virginia. Also surviving her are her
grandchildren, Patricia Bondurant Mitchell of Lexington, VA, and Samuel
Aubrey Mitchell of Halifax, VA, and New York City, step-grandchildren,
Robert Donald Harwood and his wife, Heather Beasley Harwood, Katherine
Elkin Harwood Troy and her husband, Charles Sedgwick Troy, III, and
Elizabeth Bowker Harwood Lacy and her husband, Dennis Patrick Lacy,
III, and six great grandchildren, all of Richmond, VA. She served as
minister of education, school teacher, school librarian, and on the
staff of a private library as well as an active wife of a minister
across the Commonwealth of Virginia in Southampton County, Surry
County, Bridgewater, Lynchburg, Virginia Beach, and Covington, and in
the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
She was a resident of South Boston, VA, and Halifax, VA, for 18 years
before moving to Richmond, VA, in 2002. While living in South Boston,
she was a member and Deacon of First Baptist Church, A woman ahead of
her times in many ways, she was determined to attend college and,
following the death of her Mother, she kept the home for her siblings
until the youngest finished high school, delaying entry to college
until she was 23. She was able to work her way through Georgetown
College, Georgetown, KY, taking heavy class load to finish in two years
and three quarters. She was a loving person who blessed her family
with an ability to see the beauty and blessings of simple things of
life and was a living example of how to confront adversity with a
positive spirit and determination to move forward with grace.
A service of celebration of her life will be held on July 28, 2007, at
3:00 P.M. at Loving Funeral Home, Covington, VA, with the Rev. Dr.
Michael Parnell officiating and burial will follow at Alleghany
Memorial Park, Low Moor, VA between Covington and Clifton Forge, VA.
Memorial donations may be made to Georgetown College, Georgetown, KY,
in honor and memory of former Dean of Women, Rena Calhoun, and the
deceased.
Mrs. Helen "Raye" Andrews Henderson
Mrs. Helen "Raye" Andrews Henderson of 1111 Ridge Road, Vernon Hill
died Sunday, July 22, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born
in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on October 21, 1932 and was 74 years
of age. She was the daughter of the late Charlie Andrews and Mary East
Andrews and was married to the late Walter Glenn Henderson. Mrs.
Henderson was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by one son, Allen Henderson and wife Nadine of Chatham;
one granddaughter, Michelle H. Loyd and husband Spencer of South
Boston; one step-grandson, Michael Daniels and wife Cortney of
Murfreesboro, TN; one great-grandson, Zachary Loyd; one
step-great-grandson, Gunnar Daniels; three sisters, Peggy A. Walker and
husband Cecil of South Boston, Joan A. Crowder and husband Charles of
Halifax, Ruby A. Betterton of Roxboro, NC; two brothers, J.T. Andrews
and wife Daisy of Greensboro, NC, Wayne Andrews and wife Geneva of
Halifax. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ralph, Ollis and
Randy Andrews and one sister, Alease Stephens.
Funeral services for Mrs. Henderson were held Wednesday, July 25, 2007
at 3:30 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Wilkins
and the Rev. Richard Saunders officiating. Burial followed in the
church cemetery. For memorials, please consider the Oak Level
Volunteer Fire Department. Raye's last wish was to thank Dr. Allen
Fuller, Jr. and Dr. James Witko for all that they did for her and Sarah
Hawker and Ginny Klutz, angel's here on earth. May God bless them all.
Mrs. Dorothy Edmonds Younger
Mrs. Dorothy Edmonds Younger, 71, of Bridgeport, CT, formerly of
Halifax County, died July 20, 2007 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She
was born in Halifax County on July 12, 1936, a daughter of the late
Mr. Henry Hurt Edmonds and Mrs. Beatrice Hargrove Edmonds. She was
married to the late Mr. Joseph Lee Younger and was a member of
Fellowship Temple Pentecostal Church, Bridgeport, CT.
She is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Sandra Younger-Moore, Ms. Teresa
Younger, Ms. Barbara Younger and Mrs. Linda Thorne, all of Bridgeport,
CT, Ms. Lois Younger of New Haven, CT and Mrs. Dorothy Lorraine Luke of
East Hartford, CT; two sons, Mr. Sylvester Younger, Sr. and Mr. Andrew
Younger, Sr., both of Bridgeport, CT; 24 grandchildren, nine
great-grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. Annie Williams of Stratford,
CT, Ms. Beatrice Edmonds of Bridgeport, CT, Mrs. Hallie Sparks of South
Boston, Ms. Hazel Edmonds of Meriden, CT and Mrs. Carolyn Jackson of
Mattydale, NY; seven brothers, Mr. Nathaniel Edmonds of Chatham, Mr.
Willie Womack, Mr. Preston Edmonds and Mr. Joseph Edmonds, all of South
Boston, Mr. Elijah Edmonds of Stratford, CT, Mr. Gregory Edmonds and
Mr. Lawrence Edmonds, both of Bridgeport, CT, other relatives and
friends. She was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 25 at Christ Temple Blue
Rock Holiness Church with Rev. Dr. James Jackson officiating. Burial
followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Ruby Davis Terry
Mrs. Ruby Davis Terry, 66, of 1141 Highland Hills Drive, Halifax died
Monday, July 23, 2007 at her home. She was born July 9, 1941 in
Pittsylvania County, a daughter of Annie McGregor Davis and the late
James Asbury Davis and was married to Henry Alvin Terry. She was a
member of Centerville Baptist Church. In addition to her husband and
mother, she is survived by one daughter, Carolyn T. Forlines and
husband Jason of Scottsburg; two sons, Rick A. Terry and wife Sandy
of South Boston and James O. Terry of Halifax; two sisters, Mary Ann
Motley of Chatham and Irma D. Irby and husband Ronald of Chatham and
five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother,
Clarence Davis. Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at
Centerville Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Saunders officiating.
Burial will follow in the Mulberry Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Joseph Donald Custer
Mr. Joseph Donald Custer, 72, of Danville died Monday, July 23, 2007 at
Danville Regional Medical Center. He was born in Halifax County on
June 23, 1935, a son of the late John Henry Custer and Ida Cornelia
Custer.He is survived by one brother, Jessie Custer of Danville; one
sister,
Ida E. Custer of Chatham; other relatives and friends.
Graveside memorial services will be held Saturday, July 27 at 11:00
a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery with Pastor Mike Jones
officiating. Mr. Cleveland Harris "Rooster" Wilkins
Mr. Cleveland Harris "Rooster" Wilkins, 82, of Deltona, FL died Monday,
July 23, 2007 at his home. He was born in Alton on April 6, 1925, a
son of the late Grover Cleveland Wilkins and Nannie Lou Harris Wilkins.
He formerly attended Harmony United Methodist Church.
He is survived by a sister, Gurdine Burleson of Deltona, FL along with
eight nieces and five nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters,
Emma Lee Moore and Shirley Mae Williamson.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 28 at 11:00 a.m. at
Harmony United Methodist Church with Rev. Liz Buxton and Rev. Tommy
Faust officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
