Obituaries

Harold Allen Puryear

Harold Allen Puryear, 82, of South Boston and Raleigh, NC died peacefully Saturday, July 14, 2007 with his family by his side.
Harold is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ola Whitt Puryear, his son Donnie Puryear and wife Carol; his son Andy Puryear and fiancee, Helen Lewis; and three grandchildren, Traci Puryear, Ashley Puryear, and Donnie Puryear II.
Harold was a veteran of the United States Army, proudly serving in World War II, seeing 401 days of combat in Italy, France, and Germany. He remained a member of the American Legion in South Boston and a member of the VFW in Halifax.  In 1959, he established Harold A. Puryear Trucking Company, which has grown into one of the largest trucking companies in Raleigh, North Carolina.
His passion, in addition to trucking, was auto racing. He had a great love for people and he never met a stranger. He was greatly admired and will be missed by many. Family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 7-9 PM at Mitchell Funeral Home (7209 Glenwood Avenue., Raleigh, NC.) A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 2 PM at the Shady Grove Methodist Church in South Boston. Interment, with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Nannie Roberta Womack McCargo
Mrs. Nannie Roberta Womack McCargo of 2085 MacDonald Road, Scottsburg died Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at South Boston Manor at the age of 76. Born in Halifax County on March 5, 1931 to the late Mr. Theodore Womack and Mrs. Willie Medley Womack, she was married to the late Mr. James L. McCargo, Sr. She was a member of Peaceful Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Mrs. McCargo is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy McCargo Freeman of Apple Valley, MN, Mrs. Annette Coleman of Chesapeake, and Mrs. Willie McCargo Freeman of Suffolk, three sons, Mr. James McCargo, Jr. of Laurel, MD, Mr. Calvin McCargo of Qatar, Middle East and Mr. Roosevelt Davis McCargo of Charleston, SC, 11 grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Thalia McCargo, a brother, Mr. Wilfred Lee Womack, two sons-in-law, Mr. Alonzo Coleman of Chesapeake and Mr. Reginald Freeman of Suffolk, three daughters-in-law, Mrs. Maxine McCargo of Laurel, MD, Mrs. Sumi McCargo of Qatar Middle East and Mrs. Tanya McCargo of Charleston, SC, two sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law, one special daughter, Minister Cathy McCargo and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mrs. McCargo will be held Monday, July 16 at 12 noon at the Crawford House Chapel with Minister Cathy McCargo officiating. Burial will follow in the Peaceful Tabernacle Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 2085 MacDonald Road, Scottsburg.


Mr. Herbert Hoover Miller
Mr. Herbert Hoover Miller of South Boston died Wednesday, July 11, 2207 at The Woodview Nursing Home at the age of 78. Born in Halifax County on February 6, 1929 to the late Mr. Jack Miller and Mrs. Nezzy Miller and was married to Mrs. Daisy Edmounds Miller.
Mr. Miller is survived by his wife of the home, eight daughters, Mrs. Barbara Judge of New York, Mrs. Frances Harris of the home, Mrs. Louise Robertson of Richmond, Ms. Lisa Miller, Ms. Nathalie Miller and Ms. Eliza Miller, all of Hackensack, NJ, Ms. Alice Miller and Ms. Niomi Miller, both of South Boston and three sons, Mr. Herbert Miller, Jr., Mr. David Miller and Mr. Herman Miller, all of South Boston. 19 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Mr. Pete Miller of Lynchburg and Mr. James Miller of Halifax, four sisters, Mrs. Louise Williams of Ohio, Mrs. Flossie Edmonds of Bridgeport, CT, Mrs. Beatrice Edmonds of Baltimore, MD and Mrs. Vernell Miller of South Boston, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Tonya Ford Miller of South Boston, two sons-in-law, Mr. Paul Judge of New York and Mr. Howard Harris of the home, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Georgia Miller of Halifax and host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mr. Miller will be held on Monday, July 16 at 3 p.m. at the Greater Mayfield Apostolic Church with Elder Bernard Wilkins officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 126 Robin Hood Road, South Boston.


Mr. Lester N. Garrett
Mr. Lester N. Garrett, 53, of 739 Dodd Street, Chase City died Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at Chase City Rehabilitation Nursing Facility. He was born in Halifax County on October 4, 1953, a son of the late Mr. Milton Garrett and Mrs. Phoebe Smith Garrett and was married to Mrs. Linda Woolridge Garrett. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Ms. Lucretia Garrett of Baltimore, MD and Ms. Yarnell Bates of Chase City; two sons, Mr. Lester C. Garrett of the home and Mr. Lester N. Garrett, Jr. of Baltimore, MD; six sisters, Mrs. Betty G. Bradley of Lecanto, FL, Mrs. Nannie G. Canada of Edgewood, MD, Mrs. Pearl G. Miller of Nathalie, Mrs. Phoebe G. Jennings of South Boston, Mrs. Eliza G. Ragland and Mrs. Connie Carrington, both of Clover; four brothers, Mr. William Garrett of Clover, Mr. Saint Clair Garrett of South Boston, Mr. Milton Garrett, Jr. and Mr. Alexander Garrett, both of Bronx, NY; 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, four brothers-in-law, a devoted friend, Mr. Willie J. Sydnor of Nathalie, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday, July 15 at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with Rev. James Traynham officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.


Mr. Jimmy Franklin Smith
Mr. Jimmy Franklin Smith, Sr., 71, of 114 Clayton Street, Brookneal died Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born in Campbell County on July 20, 1936, a son of the late George Smith and Gracie Shipp Smith. He is survived by three daughters, Lennis Marie Waller and Rhonda Lynn Smith, both of Nathalie, April Ann McDaniel of Brookneal; two sons, Jimmy Franklin Smith, Jr. of Brookneal and Jessie Phillip Smith of Brookneal; one sister, Linda Synder of Hurt; two brothers, Warren Smith of Nathalie and Welford D. Smith of Brookneal; eight grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandchild, Catherine Hancock and four brothers Walter, John, Malcolm and Chancey Smith.
Graveside services were held Saturday, July 14 at Childrey Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Jerry Stanfield officiating.
