Obituaries

Mrs. Paula Bush Watson
Mrs. Paula Bush Watson of Terry Trail, Nathalie died Saturday, July 7, 2007 at her home. She was born June 9, 1942 in Jasper County, IN and was 65 at the time of her death. She was the daughter of the late Paul Bush and Margaret Louise McDaniel Bush and was married to Jack LeRoy Watson. She was a member of the Willow Oak Christian Church in Virgilina.
Mrs. Watson is survived by her husband of the home, a daughter, Jackie Leigh Dawson and husband, Bobby Dawson of Nathalie, two sisters, Virginia Watson and husband Delos “Duke” Watson and Joyce Fox and husband Roger Fox, all of Crown Point, IN, four grandchildren, Arianna Nicole, Justin Lee, Drew Wayne and Jarad Michael Dawson, all of Nathalie, her father-in-law, Joseph Watson of Crown Point, IN and her dearest friend Dulcie Shimkus of Nathalie.
A funeral service will be conducted at Powell Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, July 11 at 11 a.m. with Dr. Michael Haskett officiating. Burial will follow in the Dawson family cemetery in Nathalie. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the home, 1151 Terry Trail, Nathalie. Mr. Abner O'Neal Talley
Mr. Abner O'Neal Talley, Sr., 84, of 3159 North Fork Church Road, Virgilina died Wednesday, July 4, 2007 at his home. He was born in Halifax County on November 30, 1922, a son of the late Robert Talley and Victoria Cole Talley and was married to Lestie Whitlow Talley. A self employed tobacco farmer, he was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 8.In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Abner O'Neal Talley, Jr. and wife Paula and Roger Allen Talley, all of Virgilina; one sister, Frances Puckett of Oxford, NC; two brothers, Lawrence Talley of Alton and Melvin Talley of South Boston; and one grandson, Chris Talley and wife Crystal of Oxford, NC. He was preceded in death by a brother, Elmo Talley and sisters Irene Cole and Ruth Cole.Graveside services were held Saturday, July 4 at Shady Grove U.M.C. Cemetery with Rev. Ray McGarr officiating.


Mrs. Sallie Louhagood Coleman
Mrs. Sallie Louhagood Coleman of 1075 Faulkner Loop, Virgilina died Wednesday, July 4, 2007 died at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 84. Born in Halifax County on June 28, 1923 to the late Mr. Willie Barnes and Mrs. Rosa Ann McCargo Barnes and was married to Mr. Willie Coleman. She was a member of Five Forks Baptist Church.
Mrs. Coleman is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Faith Lester of Philadelphia , PA, three sons, Mr. Perry Coleman of Hempstead, NY, Mr. Keith Coleman of Dover, DE, and Mr. Graham Coleman of Alton, a sister, Mrs. Frances Fernandez of Hollis, NY, seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one son-in-law, Mr. Joe Lester, two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Deborah Coleman and Mrs. Jackie Coleman, two brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by one son, Mr. Willie Coleman, Jr. and one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Julie Coleman.
A funeral service for Mrs. Coleman will be held Monday, July 9 at 1 p.m. at Five Forks Baptist Church with Rev. Moses N. Dixon, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 1075 Faulkner Loop, Virgilina.


Mrs. Ruth Ann Jeffress Dabbs
Mrs. Ruth Ann Jeffress Dabbs of 311 Ragland Street, South Boston died Thursday, July 5, 2007 at her home at the age of 72. Born in Halifax County on July 4, 1935 to the late Mr. George Jeffress and Mrs. Elizabeth Clarke Jeffress, she was married to Mr. Joe N. Dabbs and was a member of St. James Baptist Church.
Mrs. Dabbs is survived by her husband of Richmond, three sons, Mr. Herbert Dabbs of Philadelphia, PA., Mr. Joe Dabbs and Mr. Henry Dabbs, both of South Boston, a sister, Mrs. Linear Jackson of Scottsburg, a brother, Mr. Roy Jeffress of Richmond, eight grandchildren including Mrs. Angel Majors, 32 great grandchildren, three devoted nieces and nephews, Mrs. Josephine Williams, Mr. Joe Mitchell and Mr. Beverly Mitchell, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Juanita Womack of Richmond, a devoted friend, Mrs. Jacqueline Green and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mrs. Dabbs will be held Tuesday, July 10 at 3 p.m. at St. James Baptist Church with the Rev. Byrd Blackwell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Jeffress Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, July 9 from 7 to 8 p.m. and at all other times at the home, 311 Ragland Street, South Boston.


Mrs. Ola Mosley Carden
Mrs. Ola Mosley Carden of 1140 Allens Mill Road, Scottsburg died Thursday, July 5, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 81. Born in Halifax County on January 24, 1926 to the late Mr. Morton Thomas Mosley and Mrs. Alease Brooks Mosley, she was married to the late Mr. Burnell G. Carden and was a member of Salem Baptist Church in Red Oak.
Mrs. Carden is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Pearl McCargo of the home, Mrs. Creola Johnson of South Boston and Mrs. Catherine Jackson of Phenix, three sons, Mr. Burnell Carden, Jr. of Killeen, Texas, Mr. Lester Carden of Chase City and Mr. James Carden of Semora, NC, three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Johnson, Mrs. Eva Wilson and Mrs. Florence Lee, one brother, Mr. Edridge Mosley, 12 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, two sons-in-law, Mr. Gerome Jackson and Mr. Danny Johnson, two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Frances Carden and Mrs. Teal Carden, six sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Mr. Leroy Boyd.A funeral service for Mrs. Carden will be held Wednesday, July 11 at Salem Baptist Church in Red Oak with the Rev. Harry Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Jeffress Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. and at all other times at the home of Mr. Danny and Mrs. Creola Johnson, 116 Fairmont Apartments, South Boston.
