Obituaries

Mr. Albert L. Herndon
Mr. Albert L. Herndon of Nathalie died Sunday, July 1, 2007 in Gretna.
He was the son of the late Mr. Johnnie Herndon and Mrs. Odell Payne
Herndon.Mr. Herndon is survived by two brothers, Frank Herndon of Nathalie and Sherman Herndon of Brookneal and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mr. Herndon will be conducted on Thursday, July
5, 2007 at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home and Cremation
in Brookneal with the Rev. Sandy Palmer officiating. Burial will follow
in the Old Second Buffalo Baptist Church cemetery.


Mrs. Grady Bratcher Kent
Mrs. Grady Bratcher Kent died Sunday, July 1, 2007 at Halifax Regional
Hospital.  She was born in South Boston on February 14, 1914, a
daughter of the late James and Sophie Bratcher and was married to the
late William A. Kent.  She was educated in South Boston City Schools
and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and was retired
from St. Luke Hospital, New York City, NY.  She was a member of Mt.
Olive Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher,
missionary member and the Dorcas Club and was active in Rose Garden
Club and Past Worthy Matron of Electa Chapter #14 Order of the Eastern
Star of New York.She is survived by daughters, Jean Faulkner (Theodis) and Wilhelmina Ballou (James), all of South Boston; four grandchildren, Marvin Ballou (Starann), Dr. Karen Ballou-Hunt (Tracy), Juanita Anderson and Taia
Hicks; seven great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Shirley Bratcher;
other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her daughter
Juanita.Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist
Church with Rev. Charles Barnes officiating.  Burial will follow in
Rose Garden Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to the Mt. Olive
Baptist Church Building Fund.

Mr. Earl Philip Saunders
Mr. Earl Philip Saunders, 66, of 5068 Cody Road, Nathalie died Monday,
July 2, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He was born in Halifax
County on January 6, 1941, a son of the late Joseph William Saunders
and Mildred Anderson Saunders and was married to Rachel Chaney
Saunders.  He was a member of First Baptist Church of Republican Grove.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Cheryl
Saunders Booker and husband David, Jr. of Nathalie; one son, Bruce
Edward Saunders of Nathalie; four brothers, Louis Williams Saunders and
wife Linda of Evington, Clyde Allen Saunders and wife Rita of Gladys,
Larry Thomas (Tom) Saunders and wife Bonnie of Long Island, Harold
David Saunders and wife Mary Vernon of Midlothian; one sister, Betty
Arlene Saunders Riddle and husband Carson of Nathalie; one grandson,
Cole Wyatt Booker.Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Republican Grove with Rev. Shelton Miles, III officiating. 
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Memorials may be directed
to the Halifax Regional Hospice, 2204 Wilborn Avenue, South Boston, VA

Mr. Clinton Wayne Culley
Mr. Clinton Wayne Culley, 65, of 528 Berry Hill Road, South Boston died
Monday, July 2, 2007 at his home.  He was born in Halifax County on
August 1, 1941, a son of the late Annie Russell Culley and John L.
Culley, Sr.  He was a retired driver for Martin Trucking.
He is survived by one daughter, Robin C. Johnson and husband Wayne of
Southbury, CT; grandchildren, Matt and Mandi Johnson; a devoted friend
of 25 years, Nancy Stevens of South Boston; six sisters, Lena C. Yancey
of Henderson, NC, Gloria C. Russell of Randolph, Ethel C. Everett of
Scottsburg, Iris C. Redd of Clover, Nancy C. Matthews of South Boston,
Sharon C. Church of Halifax; a brother, Larry Culley of South Boston;
extended family Judy Stevens and Ricky Mulchi, Erica and John Taylor
Conner, Kathy and Bill Granger, Danny and Mary Jo Stevens and family,
Mandy, Chris, Dakota and Deonna Loftis.  He was preceded in death by
sisters, Marie C. Snead, Grey C. Dunkley and brothers, John L. "Pete"
Culley, Jr., Allen Culley, Jimmy Culley, Marshall Grant Culley and Roy
Glenn Culley.
Funeral services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at Brooks Funeral
Home with Rev. Coy Terry officiating.  Burial will follow in Oak Ridge
Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to the Halifax County Cancer
Association, P.O. Box 875, South Boston, VA 24592.


Mr. John Randolph Duffer
Mr. John Randolph Duffer, 80, 103 Rosehill Drive, South Boston died
Monday, July 2, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He was born in
Charlotte County on June 11, 1927, a son of the late Percy and Linda
Duffer and was married to the late Bessie King Duffer.  He was a member
of Dan River Baptist Church.
He is survived by his sisters, Mildred Jones of Farmville, Nellie
Newcomb of Saxe and Louise Edwards of Burkeville.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, July 4 at 2:00 p.m. at Oak
Ridge Cemetery with Rev. Melvin Bradshaw and Rev. Doug Gibson
officiating.


Mr. Lawrence Daniel Perkins
Mr. Lawrence Daniel Perkins, 77, of 1197 Cluster Springs Road, South
Boston died Wednesday, July 4, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He
was born in Halifax County in 1930, a son of the late Joseph Perkins
and Mamie Simmons Perkins and was married to the late Mary Jean
Barksdale Perkins.  He was a member of Oak Level Presbyterian Church,
Oak Level Volunteer Fire Department and the Halifax County Rescue
Squad.He is survived by one son, Gene Perkins of Alton; one daughter, Mary
Quay of Sophia, NC; four grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; two
brothers, Thurman Perkins and Wesley Perkins, both of Halifax; one
sister, Bernice Spencer of Crystal Hill.  He was preceded in death by a
number of brothers and sisters.Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Norman Tally officiating.  Burial will follow in Oak Level Presbyterian Church.  The family will receive
friends Friday from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home.  Memorials
may be directed to a charity of your choice or the Leukemia Association
or the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Ct., Glen Allen, VA
23060.
