Obituaries
Kierra Nicole Crowder
Kierra Nicole Crowder, age 8, of Nathalie, died Sunday, June 24, 2007 in
Charlottesville. Kierra was the daughter of Mr. Keith R. Crowder and Ms.
Patricia A. Hancock. She was a second grade student at Sydnor Jennings
Elementary School.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by one half sister, Tiffany
Crowder of Greensboro, NC; grandmothers, Judy A. Hancock of Nathalie and
Novella M. Medley of South Boston; one great-grandmother, Margaret Medley
of South Boston; nine uncles, three aunts, six great aunts, one nephew, a
devoted cousin, Terri (Missy) Tucker, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 30 at 2:00 p.m. at Millstone
Baptist Church with Rev. Chester Spruill officiating. Burial will follow
in the church cemetery.
Mr. James Anthony Watson
Mr. James Anthony Watson, 33, formerly of South Boston, died Monday, June
18, 2007 in Atlanta, GA. He was born in Halifax County on July 25, 1973, a
son of the late Ms. Faye S. Watson and was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist
Church.
He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Tara Watson Bailey of South Boston; two
brothers, Mr. Lawrence Watson and Mr. Lance Watson, both of South Boston;
two nephews, Mr. Adam Coleman and Mr. Antwan Bailey; his grandmother, Ms.
Rosetta Watson; his great-grandmother, Ms. Carrie Watson; one
brother-in-law, Mr. Alvin Bailey, three aunts, seven uncles, one great
aunt, other relatives and friends.
Memorial services were held Wednesday, June 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Jeffress
Funeral Home with Rev. Minister Shirley Faulkner officiating.
Mr. Roy Lacy King
Mr. Roy Lacy King, 75, of 3021 L.P. Bailey Memorial Highway, Halifax died
Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at Virginia Baptist Hospital, Lynchburg. He was
born in Pittsylvania County on October 6, 1931, a son of the late Robert
King and Lillie Mae King Owen and was married to Linda Lawrence King. He
was a member of McKendree United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Ronald Lacy King of
Montpelier; four sisters, Virginia Hanes of Lexington, NC, Susie Waller of
Bedford, Emma Ann Thornton of Radford, Virgie Marsh of High Point, NC;
three brothers, Herman King and Roger King, both of Gretna and Bert King
of Brookneal. He was preceded in death by one sister, Irene Barbour and
four brothers, Charles King, Herbert King, J.L. King and James King.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 29 at 2:00 p.m. at Powell
Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Brian Simmons and Rev. Joseph Lotts
officiating. Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens. The family
will meet tonight from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home. Memorials
may be directed to McKendree United Methodist Church, 1100 Younger Road,
Halifax, VA 24558.
Mrs. Annie May Seamster Coyne
Mrs. Annie May Seamster Coyne, 100, of Green Valley Road, Clover died June
26, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in Halifax County on
March 9, 1907, a daughter of the late Alfred Seamster and Cora Newcomb
Seamster and was married to the late John Patrick Coyne. She was a member
of St. Paschals Baylon Catholic Church.
She is survived by one nephew, Newton Seamster of Drakes Branch; one
devoted great-niece and nephew, Joyce and Richard Cheek of Clover, other
relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by one son and
daughter-in-law, Henry and Frances Veach, two brothers, Alfred and Robert
Seamster and two sisters, Virginia Fraine and Clara Orheim.
Graveside services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Clover Cemetery with
Father Steve Antes and Jennie Knotz officiating. Memorials may be directed
to St. Paschal Baylon Catholic Church, South Boston, VA 24592.
Mrs. Edna Smith (Peggy) Allen
Mrs. Edna Smith (Peggy) Allen, 86, of Cheraw, SC died Monday, June 25,
2007. She was born in Rockingham, NC on December 8, 1920, a daughter of
the late James Harrison and Estelle Coward Smith and was married to the
late Harry William Allen. She was a member of Cheraw First Baptist Church,
a member of the Women's Missionary Union and was a former member of
Scottsburg Baptist Church.
She is survived by one son, John Harrison Carpenter and wife Julienna of
Baltimore, MD; one daughter, Virginia Lee Allen Lewis and husband Richard
of Greensboro, NC; one daughter-in-law, Bonnie Kate Chavis of Cheraw, SC;
two grandsons, Thomas Myron Chavis and Randy Allen Lewis, both of
Greensboro, NC; two granddaughters, Jane Elizabeth Hyatt of Cheraw, SC and
Virginia Anne Lewis of Reidsville, NC; one sister-in-law, Helen Smith,
numerous great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. She was
preceded in death by two brothers, Rozell Smith and Neil Smith, two
sisters, Bulah Mae Leviner and Effie Smith and one sister-in-law, Jennie
Mae Smith.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at Kiser Funeral Home Chapel.
Visitation will be held today from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home
with graveside services to follow at 2:30 p.m. at Oakland Cemetery,
Scottsburg with Rev. Richard Lewis officiating. Memorials may be directed
to Scottsburg Baptist Church, P.O. Box 85, Scottsburg, VA.
Mrs. Doris Smith Brookes
Mrs. Doris Smith Brookes, 85, of 425 Hamilton Blvd., South Boston died
Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in
Halifax County on August 6, 1921, a daughter of the late Byrd W. Smith and
Irene Snead Smith and was married to the late Samuel Owen Brookes, II. She
was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school,
was a member of South Boston Garden Club, an avid golfer and ladies club
champion for several years at Halifax Country Club.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary Sanders Garrard and husband Will of
Buckshoal; one son, Samuel O. Brookes, III and wife Marilyn of Jackson,
MS; three brothers, George L. "Lindy" Smith and wife Mary of Richmond,
Walker S. Smith of Midlothian and Harry Byrd "H.B." Smith and wife Janet
of Lynchburg; two sisters, Mary Eliza Daniels of South Boston and Rachael
S. Locke and husband John of Drakes Branch, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 29 at 11:00 a.m. at First
Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Russell Lee officiating. Burial will
follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from
7:00-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to
Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Home, P.O. Box 1398, Brookneal, VA 24528.
