 Herman Hugh Womack
Mr. Herman Hugh Womack, Sr., 67, of 3123 Mountain Road, Halifax died
Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital.  He was born in
Halifax County on October 7, 1940, a son of the late Herman Lee Womack
and Tassie Nash Womack.  He was married to Shirley Mason Womack, was a
member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church and a retired salesman with Pet
Dairies.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Joyce W.
Tysinger and husband Darryl of Halifax; one son, H. Hugh Womack, Jr. of
Halifax; three sisters, Odell Younger of Nathalie, Marie Alderson of
Vernon Hill and Kathleen Perkins of Halifax; two brothers, Harold J.
Womack of Vernon Hill and Robert Womack of Pelham, NC; and three
grandchildren, Lillian Grace Tysinger, Sara Tysinger and Samantha
Tysinger.
Graveside services will be held Friday, June 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Mt.
Vernon Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Michael Parnell officiating.  The
family will receive friends at the home.  Memorials may be directed to
the American Diabetes Association, 530 East Main Street, Suite 200,
Richmond, VA 23219.
 
 Michael Lee Johns
Michael Lee Johns, 19, of 2020 Old Mill Road, Halifax died Saturday,
June 21, 2008.  He was born in Jacksonville, FL, on March 24, 1989, a
son of Tammy Johns Hayes of Halifax and Tony Ira Johns of Jacksonville,
FL and step-son of Ronnie Hayes, Sr.  He was employed by Dollar General
Distribution Center, was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member
of River Hill Hunting Club.  He was loved by many family and friends.
He is survived by his parents; one sister, Michelle Ann Johns of
Halifax; one step-brother, (Lil) Ronnie Hayes, Jr. of Dallas, TX;
grandparents, Carolyn and Sammy Phillips of Halifax; aunt, Penny Bolin
and husband Kenneth of Halifax; uncle, Jay Creasy and Christine Frye of
Halifax; special aunt, Tammy Joiner of Jacksonville, FL; special
cousins Hayley Bolin, Alexis Bolin, Jayden Bolin, Austin Creasy, Wyatt
Creasy, Kalee Creasy, Jayson Creasy, other relatives and friends.  He
was preceded in death by his Papa Bernard Creasy, cousin Joseph Bolin
(JoJo), grandmother Annette Wallace and great-grandparents, Ruth and
Manning Wallace.
Funeral services will be held today at 3:00 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home
with Rev. C.W. Lacks of Solid Rock Praise and Worship Center, Chase
City, officiating.  Burial will follow at Halifax Baptist Church,
Nathalie.
 Willie James Carrington
Mr. Willie James Carrington, (Bro) or (Slim), formerly of Halifax
County, died Wednesday, June 18, 2008.  He was born February 8, 1945, a
son of Willie A. Carrington and the late Otis W. Carrington. He was
educated in Halifax County School System, was a United States Army
Veteran, serving in the Vietnam War, was a retired foreman for the
International Longshoreman Association Local No. 1458, Norfolk and was
a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Carrington of Norfolk; his mother of
Turbeville; daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Sherena Carrington-Parker and
Mr. Ray Parker, Jr. of Suffolk; two sisters, Ms. Madeline C. Scott
(Joe) of Camden, SC and Ms. Wanda C. Tucker of South Boston; three
brothers, Mr. Otis H. Carrington and Mr. Bernard L. Carrington, both of
South Boston and Mr. Gregory L. Carrington of Oxon Hill, MD; one uncle,
Mr. Julius "Pete" Carrington; two aunts, Ms. Candice Woods, Mrs.
Dorothy James; nieces, Susan, Judy, TuRhonda, Felica, Cheryll, Leslie,
Laura and Michelle and nephews, Bernard, Jr., Gregory, Jr., Reginald
Jr. and Donnell; four great-nieces, three great-nephews, other
relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 23 at Rock Church
International, Virginia Beach, with interment in Woodlawn Cemetery,
Virginia Beach.

 

 Herbert Hoover Dixon 
Mr. Herbert Hoover Dixon, 79, of Richmond, formerly of Halifax County,
died Saturday, June 21, 2008 at Imperial Manor Care.  He was born in
Halifax County on June 14, 1929, a son of the late Mr. Bill Dixon and
Mrs. Mary Street Dixon.  He was married to Mrs. Hilda Gilmore Dixon and
was a member of Traynham Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Ms. Mary
Marie Dixon, Mrs. Barbara Ann Roberts and Ms. Mamie Dixon, all of
Richmond; two sons, Mr. Randy Noel Dixon of Nathalie and Mr. Orange
Lorenzo Dixon of Richmond; four step-sons, Mr. Joseph McKinley Gilmore,
Mr. Charles S. Gilmore, Mr. Carl James Gilmore and Mr. Jessie Bates
Gilmore, all of Richmond; 17 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; one
son-in-law, Mr. James Edward Terrell; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Hazel
Dixon and Mrs. Carolyn Gilmore, other relatives and friends.  He was
preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Maggie Mae Dixon and three brothers,
Mr. Moses Dixon, Sr., Mr. Henry Dixon and Mr. Willie Dixon.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 27 at 1:00 p.m. at Traynham
Grove Baptist Church with Rev. William A. Keen officiating.  Burial
will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends at
1056 Henry's Trail, Nathalie.
 
 Nelida Elena (Lovaglio) Hansen
Nelida Elena (Lovaglio) Hansen (89) of Scottsburg, died at home after a
prolonged illness on June 12, 2008.
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on July 18, 1919, Mrs. Hansen lived in
Scottsburg for the past 14 years and previously in Springfield, VA for
14 years.  She was naturalized a citizen of the United States in 1960
after learning English and studying as required at that time to apply
for citizenship.  She met Joy H. Hansen in San Francisco, California
and married in 1960.
She was a talented career seamstress and was employed by the San
Francisco Opera and later at various formal wear establishments,
altering wedding dresses and tuxedos.  She officially retired in 1989
and pursued homemaking and her hobby of collecting what-nots and
raising her son, Hawley George Hansen.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
(LDS) and worshipped at the chapel near Barnes Junction, Virginia.  In
her elder years, she enjoyed cooking specialty gourmet foods and
gardening.
Her parents (Amelia Gaudry and Salvador Lovaglio), a brother Jorge
Lovaglio, a sister Amelia Jose de Paladino, and a stepson Kevin Jay
Hansen preceded Mrs. Hansen in death.  Survivors include her husband,
Joy Hawley Hansen, one child Hawley George (Antoniette) Hansen of
Ashburn, VA, three grandchildren (Emily, Anthony, and Cameron) and
three step children, Deborah (William) Butler, Elizabeth Johnson, a
sister Lidia (Carlos) de Labaig of Buenos Aires Argentina.
A reception was held at the LDS Chapel near Barnes Junction, VA just
off highway 92 on June 18 at 7 PM.
Internment is to be arranged.
 
 Lucille Hailey Clark
Mrs. Lucille Hailey Clark, age 81 of Nathalie died Saturday, June 21,
2008 at her residence.  She was the daughter of the late Mary Susie
Hailey.
She is survived by four daughters, Marie Tune (Lacy), Susan Tune
(Robert), both of  Nathalie,  Linda Carr (Charles) of Richmond and Kay
Clark of  Woodbridge; two sons, Jackie Clark of Dale City and Joe Clark
of Nathalie; two sons at heart, Louis Logan (Barbara) of Nathalie and
Willie Waller of Danville.
Funeral services will be held today at 1:00 p.m. at Republican Grove
Baptist Church, Nathalie with Rev. Dr. L.S. Otey officiating.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

 

 Laura Bell Dance Carson
Mrs. Laura Bell Dance Carson, formerly of Denniston, died Saturday,
June 21, 2008 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Fayetteville, North
Carolina.  She was the daughter of Mr. Seymore and Mrs. Selena Coleman
Dance and was born on April 15, 1915, in Halifax County.  She was a
graduate of Person County High School, a graduate of Winston Salem
Teachers College and was a former teacher in Philadelphia, PA and
Halifax County, VA.
She is survived by four nephews: Asa and Richard Dance of
Philadelphia, PA; Malcolm Johnson of Spring Lake, NC and John Jessie
Link of Roxboro,NC; three nieces: Mary Dance Early of Philadelphia, PA;
Sarah Mynnerlyn of NY, JoAnn Dance Sprattley of Suffolk, VA.  She was
preceded in death by her siblings  Asa Dance, Curley Dance Darden, Ida
Dance Johnson Thomas, Ulylsses Dance, Jessie John Dance and Joseph
Dance.
Visitation will be on Saturday, June 28 at 12:00 Noon to 1:00 P.M. at
Zion Hill Baptist Church, Virgilina.  The funeral services will be
begin immediately following at 1:00 P.M.
 Jewel Owen Conner
Mrs. Jewel Owen Conner, 69, of South Boston died June 23, 2008 at
Halifax Regional Hospital.  She was born in Halifax County on July 28,
1938, a daughter of the late Howell Watts Owen and Inez Newbill Owen.
She was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church, serving as youth and
adult choir director, pianist and Sunday school teacher, was past
president of Bosom Buddies, board member of Serenity Garden
Association, was employed with Carter Bank and Trust and was a
volunteer at Halifax Regional Hospital.
She is survived by one daughter, Greta Holcomb and husband Andy of
South Boston; one son, Tony Conner and wife Janice of Wilson, NC; one
sister, Elsie Powell Irby and husband Ed of Clarksville; two
grandchildren, Matthew Martin and Adam Martin; two great-grandchildren,
Damien and Haillie Martin; one sister-in-law, Helen Owen; special
cousin, Evelyn Bennett.  She was preceded in death by a brother, Willie
Green "Billy" Owen.
Funeral services will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at Hunting Creek
Baptist Church with Rev. W.D. Mills and Rev. Tony Sisk officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Memorials may be directed
